Turbelle Classic 4002

hi,

i have been thinking about getting one of the classic 4002 pumps for a new tank i am setting up, but i have a few questions about it. first and foremost, are they quiet? how do they compare to the other tunzes in terms of flow, electricity consumption, etc.? also, my tank (acrylic) has an approx. 2" diameter hole drilled on the top bracing for a closed loop return, would i be able to fit the impeller assembly through that hole and have the pump rest on the bracing?

thanks in advance

They have a fan and they make noise on the same level of a late 80's early 90's PC. The flow is fairly wide the electricity consumption is also reasonably low, about 45W I believe. You could fit the impeller through the hole. Besides the noise the main drawback is the flow is mainly near the surface but a directional cone is provided. The main advantages are that they can literally be rebuilt indefinitely. This pump has been made since 1972 and I have repaired pumps that are 25 years old. One other cool thing is that with the adapter you can hook it to the multi or single controller and the speed is far more adjustable than any other pump, it can go so slow you can watch the impeller turn. The only other drawback is service is complicated, it has bearings which in the best conditions last 3 years and you would have to be at least mechanically inclined enough to be able to do most minor car repairs, like oil changes, filter changes, it is about that complex. Otherwise you have to send it in. Expect to pay $40 every couple years to keep it running.

Will the production of these classics be phased out and stopped?

Will replacement bearings be available as spare parts (assuming after cessation of production) from the Tunze website?

They have been slated to be phased out for years but the demand remains in tropical climates as they add no heat. Given the huge number out there, I doubt the parts supply would be cancelled, you can still get parts for the 1001 which is a smaller version that hasn't been made in at least 10 years.
