I am having problems with running this ps in my sump. First, I think it will overflow if I leave it running more than 30 seconds. It fills up with water super fast, even in the collection cup. Second, it is comepeting for water with the return pump..... My sump is only 16 gallons, so I am a little worried here. Im scared to raise the water level to much, because I might get an overflow. This is my first sump, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

the multi SL is a great skimmer.
You can turn those 2 plastic black caps to control the level of the water in the skimmer I try to keep that at lower level of collection cup. if your skimmer is overflowing at the fully open position ( arrow on the rotating black cap pointing perpendicular to the tube) then yo ucan attach the neck extension piece that comes with the skimmer which will increase the length and decrease risk of overflow and usually give thicker skimmate.
try to take out those black plastic caps and look at the position of hte howl and the insert them back and start rotating them to understand how they function...

I have the same skimmer and it works great. What pump are you using on it? I had that same issue with mine over flowing in the begining but it was only becuase I wasnt drawing enough air into the skimmer. Like maroun.c said make sure your the water discharge knobs are turned properly.

I have the same skimmer. I am in the middle of changing my set up to a sump also. Good to hear that people think it is a good skimmer.
Although I am considering picking up a Reef Octopus Extreme 160 mainly because it has a better 'in sump' design.

had the Multi SL for 1 year on my 150 G before I upgraded to the Huricone which is made by the same company as the octopus.
The ocopus is a very different skimmer as the size is much bigger and the pump is much better. Iwas advised though to get the reeof octopus pro as the pump is betterr than the extreeme but those had been discontinued and that's why I went with the Hurricone. If you can afford the price difference I woud highly suggest the hurricone as the pump volute and pinweel have been improved and also it's somehow a transition between cone skimmers and regular ones. if you don't have plans to upgrade later on I'm sure youll be happy with the extreeme on a 75 Gallon.

I also have the same skimmer running my 90 gallon, it has 2 black knobs that u can control the water flow, the knobs have a line if u have them to the front they will restrict the water flow, if u have them to the back u will run the risk in overflowing ur collection cup, good luck.

the OR 250 is what ships with this skimmer so it sohuld be fine. If you're not seeing any bubbles at all then somthing is wrong, I would check the following:
-the airline going in the pump got have gotten detached, open the pumps screen cover and check if te airline is connected.
-the other end of the airline should be in a silencer above water level, check that it's not submerged
-check that the airline is not cloged by salt buildup.
-check that the silencer ( the tube with two outlets to which the airline woud connect) is not filled with water.
Try to blow in the airline tubing going to the pump to see if bubbles will appear in the pump or will go in the skimmer as that could tell you what's going wrong.

I am sorry, but I just do not understand the airline you are taking about going in the pump compared to the silencer. Are these not the same things? Here is the set up. The pump is submerged 4 inches below the water on the bottom of the sump. There is a piece of tubin that connects the pump to the skimmer. There is another piece of tubing that I just pushed into the top of the pump that runs from the pump to the side of the sump ( this is the silencer correct?) I blow into the silencer, and I get bubbles forming in the protien skimmmer. The bubbles quickly subside if I do not keep forcing air into the silencer which in turn goes into the pump. You say the airline going in the pump coud have gotten detached? Idk what air line you are speaking of? Sorry for the redundant ?s

Glad it all worked out in the end. sorry for lack of being to explain it better but what yuo described was exactly what I was mentioning never thought someone could out the airline the other way around and get it to spit water instead of suck air...
Give it few days from now to break in and it should start colecting some skimate for you.
