I've heard receintly that some snails are bad for clams or coral. I wanted to know if anyone could give me input of turbo snails.... will it mess with my clams? What about my corals?
Turbos are reef safe. Pyramidallids are bad for clams. They look like 3-5 mm ceriths and cluster at the base of the clams. Those are the only harmful snails that come to my mind right now. I am sure there are more.
nassarius usually show up after the fact and are blamed for killing the clam when they are just doing there job as part of the CUC. there are species of whelks that resemble nassarius snails and often sold as such, these are a definite clam predator.
I find a Nassarius that is not well fed will make a meal out of a healthy clam if it's gets a chance. Especially since they burrow and don't even have to come up to make a meal of a clam. Your best protection is to make sure your clam is set on a cup shaped piece of rock to hold it secure.
I caught a Nassarius snail munching on my Crocea clam. I think a hungry nassarius will go after a healthy clam. I emailed wet web media and they had also heard of a hungry Nasssarius munching on a healthy clam.
