Turboflotor 1000 Question

Hi....

Thinking of putting one of these in a sump and need to know the minimum water depth they need to operate. Also how much space the skimmer takes up in the sump (footprint), and the height needed to remove skimmer cup easily.

Thanks for the help,

Which recirc pump will you be using, the Rio or the Ocean Runner? There is quite a difference in size but the OceanRunner is a much better pump. Also how do you plan to feed the skimmer, either from the overflow or with a seperate pump? A seperate pump like a MaxiJet 900 works best but also takes a little more room.

I have the Ocean Runner pump. I'm a 58 year old granny so you'll have to go easy on me when I say I didn't know I needed another pump or plumbing to the overflow. I'm not doing the plumbing.......a friend is. Assuming I get the Maxi jet 900 what would the minimum water depth be to operate this skimmer? The reason I wanted to know is the sump that the LFS sold me for the 120 gallon stand ended up being too big for the stand. It was an Oceanic RR sump. There wasn't enough clearance between the top of the sump and the bottom of the cabinet door for me to get my arm into the sump.....about 3 1/2 to 4 inches. My daughter has a sump that is 16 inches high vs. the 18 inches high on the Oceanic. It measures 36x11 1/2 x16 with several baffles (. I was hoping this shorter sump would allow me to keep the AM skimmer.

Thanks,
Janey

The footprint of the skimmer with the OceanRunner pump is about 16" long by 6" wide. So you will need and area at least 16" wide in the sump. Mine sits in water that varies between 9 and 12" deep and works great. You will notice a piece of 1/2" x 6" or so pipe that sticks out at a slight angle on the lower part of the skimmer, thats where you feed it. It can fed from the overflow or a pump. I prefer using the MaxiJet 900 powerhead, set it down in the sump next to the skimmer and hook it up with a 12" or so piece of 1/2" reinforced tubing so it won't kink. Works fine and is real simple.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the helpful hints. Can the Ocean Runner Pump be plumbed so the skimmer is in the sump and the pump is connected outside through a bulkhead? The sump has baffles and I don't have a 16" long area for both the pump and skimmer to sit.

I have never seen anything like that and think it would be pretty tough because the fittings are metric size and most bulkheads normally available are not. With the Rio pump it is a bit smaller, about 3 or 4 inches if I remember right so might get away with 12 or 13" of sump area.

Hi Fishy1,
When I had my Turboflotor, my OceanRunner 2700 was connected to the skimmer. I also used a Rio 600(I know...) for a feed pump that sat next to the OR pump. I'll have to dig for some pictures to see if I can show you how I had it.
