What is the best turnover rate?

I'm at 40-45x now and happy but maybe increasing it in the future providing no sandstorms ensue. It all really depends on what r u planning to keep(SPS vs LPS etc).
U really need some turnover rate for sps to be healthy IMO

I am currently keeping zoa sps lps... Yeah, i was thinking about the sand storm. How do people normally have it setup where it doesnt create a whirlpool?

well it takes some patience and planning. U have to play with ur PH's in order to find that chaotic flow w/o sandstorms. I t greatly depends on how populated Ur reef is and how many mature colonies and so forth u have.
IMO for a mixed reef ( HOW BIG?) u should be ok with about 20-30x.
The goal is IMO to avoid dead spots and try to recreate that chaotic flow of a reef.

how do you figure out the turnover rate again...

calculate how many gallon/hr then / by total tank vol =viola!

I agree with gasman as far as the chaotic flow and finding the right spots for powerheads are concerned. I have around 50X turnover and since I have increased the flow my SPs seem much happier
