Hi, I'm new to the hobby, and looking into reef life. I understand that sea turtle are illegal, so here my Question can a fresh water turtle survive in salt water and with other fishes?
 
Only if you paint camouflage on its shell so it blend in.. And you should look into the mini dolphins there easier to get than sea turtles
 
There arent any turtles of any sort that will survive in a reef tank. Unless your tank is rather large like 100000000 gallons.
 
My wife asked the same question, no, salt water turtles are specalized to salt water life, fresh water turtles will die in the salt.

Some people on these forums are like sharks eagerly waiting to tear people apart for something that they don't necessarily agree with.
 
Don't be silly. Dolphins aren't reef safe.

I'd try a pelican. They won't stay in the tank long enough to cause any harm to your coral. Besides, it'll add some dimension to your tank while it sits on the water, and take care of all of your jumpers...

If you are serious about getting a turtle don't put it in saltwater. And even if you could why would you risk it eating a 30-100 dollar fish. Another thing a terrarium and marine animals would have to be a really big tank. There is plenty of unique things to put in a saltwater tank....Just a ton of options.
 
Diamonbacked terripins will survive in a reef tank, they will eat everything in your tank, but they are salt water turtles and the young are small. They are pretty common here in New York but I think they are illegal to take. They are sometimes sold in Asian stores to eat, but I also think that is illegal so I don't know how you would get one. I used to keep them when I was a stupid kid.

They are, thats why I said it was illegal. When I had them as a kid they were not endangered and they were for sale, to eat.

I believe they are brackish, not salt.
 
Even though I hardly ever watched the show, why am I reminded of the "Seinfeld" episode where they released the turtle into the ocean but it was one of the saddleback kind from the Galapagos Islands?
 
A Sea Turtle sounds awesome! I have a 200g coming in soon. A baby turtle can't possibly need more space and when it does ( years down the road) ill just donate him to an aquarium or Panda Express...they'll know what to do

I know they are listed as brackish but they are fairly common here in the Long Island Sound in at least one place.
I swim with them all the time in this preserve in the Sound. It is full salt water and it is also full of fiddler crabs which I think they are eating.
