Two Part dosing

What do those of you who dose two part use for the components? BRS has a nice starter kit, but I'm not sure how their cost compares to other options. I've read the articles on Randy's two part, but then I read that a lot of the components, like Dowflakes, have chemically changed and may not be as good anymore.

I don't think I'm ready quite yet for a calcium reactor. Thought I'd try two part or kalkwasser and see how that goes first.

I'd buy the calcium reactor and not look back. I dosed for a year or two and a reactor is definitely the way to go.

I make my own two part for dosing. For the calcium, I picked up several bags of Prestone Driveway Heat a few winters ago (I probably still have a 5 gallon bucket left). For the alkalinity, I grab several of the large bags of Arm and Hammer baking soda every summer. It can be found in the pool section at Wal-Mart. Magnesium is from Epsom salts.

I have a friend who owns a landscaping company. They use Peladow for their ice melt when they do snow removal. He said I can have a 50lb bag for $30.

We used to get the A&H baking soda at Sams for our pool, so I was planning on that too.

I was also going to use espom salts.

Pife - depending on how much trouble this is, I may switch to a carbon reactor eventually. I don't have an unlimited amount of room under my tank, so I've got to make some concessions somewhere. Plus I think I can buy a lot of ice melt, Epsom salt, and baking soda for the $500+ I was looking at spending on the calcium reactor.

Do you use Randy's recipe for mixing the solutions?

Yes, I use his recipe #1 where you bake the baking soda. I usually make up about 4 or 5 gallons at a time.

What dosing pump do you have or do you plan on using? Good ones cost a couple hundred. How reliable is it? When you get a calcium reactor setup it's rock solid.
