Two Plumbing Questions?

Hi,I was wondering what the advantages of using SCH 80 plumbing over SCH 40 plumbing are and what type is better slip or threaded bulk-heads etc and why?

The answer to both your questions is essentially personal preference. SCH 80 PVC is just darker and easier to hide in your tank, however it does cost more than the normal 40.

As for the bulkheads, dual-threaded ones let you screw in strainers on the watery side, and screw in PVC fittings on the outside. Slip bulkheads require you to use PVC cement to secure the plumbing, which ends up in a more permanent connection compared to the threaded option. I'm not a plumber, but I would wager to guess that if done properly, a cemented connection would be more secure than a threaded one. Even with lots of Teflon tape, a threaded connection still may have an opportunity to leak.

I hope this helps you out some.

Schedule 80 is heavier duty. For normal plumbing and fittings sched 80 is not required. If you can fit a sched 80 bulkhead, however, I'd go with that. They require a larger drilled hole than a sched 40, but they have better thicker gaskets, and can be tightened down more without as much fear of cracking.

Re slip vs thread, it's personal preference, and whether or not you may ever switch pipes that are hooked into the bulkhead. I prefer threaded. It's easier to take apart if you ever have problems with the bulkhead, and you get the bonus of being able to reuse the rest of your plumbing. Make sure to put plenty of unions in line as well.

You shouldn't use lots of teflon tape. Just a few turns. Teflon taped threaded connections are very secure.

I didn't mean to use a whole roll on a threaded connection.

Also, a threaded connection IMO has a greater tendency to leak than a properly fitted slip connection. Of course, too much, or too little cement on a slip fitting would give it a greater tendency to leak or completely fail.

I disagree. Key word is properly, and properly done threaded connections are fine.

Also, "lots of tape" doesn't necessarily mean the whole roll. Someone reading that post could think that the way to get a proper connection with a threaded fitting is to use "lots of tape" -- that is not so.

So if I use sch 80 bulk-heads will sch 40 pipes fit into that bulk-head,can you mix and match? On a side note if I drill my tank with extra holes on case i decide to add a CL later can you just put a bulk head on there and keep it closed or is there a better way?

How can something "not leak" better? I don't get that. It either leaks or it doesn't. I've used both fittings and neither has leaked.

I much prefer threaded bulkheads. Its much easier to remove if need be and I use the paste crayon type thread sealant and never had a problem. The guy who built my swimming pool told me thats all they use on threaded PVC for their pools and its been in my back yard leak free since 1983!

I gave up on this thread. No one seems to understand what I'm talking about. Go with whatver bulkhead you prefer. :p

It's just Cranky Monday. People seem to nitpick every tiny thing on Monday. Don't take it personally, there are other posters out there today that also regret using seemingly harmless words like "lots", , "this", and "or"... :smokin:
