Tyree BGM vs WWC BGM

$452.50. That's the closing price for a 1/4" of BGM on reeffarmers auction. Why not just buy the BGM from WWC or others selling them in the classified for $150-$225 a frag? Does the name Tyree really double the price of a coral even when its the same coral?

...Maybe $250 then... I recently spent this much on a couple of chalices. However, that was at a retail site, and if I were buying from a hobbiest I would have not paid more than $200 for a similar sized frag.

That's just me though, and I am just getting into the LE/rare chalices. Once I can start fragging more of my colonies I may consider paying more per coral since I would be able to put profits from my tank back into it, instead of adding to my tank debt :).

I don't think the price is unreasonable, but that's my opinion. If i like something I'll pay a premium price for it. It's an auction and someone felt it was worth that much to them. I can't fault them for that. It's a sweet piece!

I don't think the name Tyree necessarily contributed to such high price in this case... It was an auction where the max value is decided by the bidders whereas on WWC or RC, the final value is predetermined by the sellers. The Melting Pot chalice didn't have Tyree's name on it and look how high it went on ebay few months back. :o

For comparison, I have the Emerald Mummy Eye, the regular Mummy Eye, the BGM, and another chalice similar but with a much larger orange/pink mouth. Looking at all 4 next to each other, you might be able to tell the difference, but standing alone, they look too similar to even be consider different (except the one with the larger mouth). I will try to take some pics when I have some time.

I know this is slightly OT, but I'd love to see a comparison shot of ME and BGM. I can def. tell the difference between EME and ME, but for the life of me I can't tell the difference between ME and BGM. Is this a case of Tyree just attatching his name to a previously "named" coral? Kinda like Miami Hurricane and Pumpkin Patch. Not trying to cause any drama or anything...but simply for clarity. :)

Here's an old pic of my ME
and EME next to each other, I'll get some updated/better shots.

this is what happens when a bidding war takes place on an auction site, I was following that auction and it just kept going up and up, the same thing happened with the Pot O Gold favia, two polyps sold for $116.50

Kigs- On Tyree's site it shows a comparison between the BGM and ME. After seeing that, I see no point in getting the BGM over the ME. The Mummy Eye is much more vibrant and colorful throughout the entire coral, and the Bubble Gum Monster close up is more drab.

You should check out the EME. That piece just glows.

I was at the store to get my frag of the bubble gum monster this past weekend and the photo on RF does not do that coral justice. I was much more impressed when i saw the mother colony in person. I held off getting a frag because of the pics i saw. Definately an impressive piece.

I am tryin to get ahold of a mummy eye and emerald ME. Then I can compare them, but I'm pretty sure they are all different.

Gadgets... I have all of them and there is a difference in them. All of my pieces are small frags so maybe things will change more as they grow.

My 2 cents worth on looks and differences: The BGM seems to have a redder/pink mouth which seems to be bigger than the Mummy Eye mouths, which appear more oragneish...but the Mummy Eye can get big mouths going (have you seen Jose's avatar? :)). The greens are also different in the body. Since neither of mine are anymore than frags time will tell the true differences. The EME is totally different than both the others...I can get it to go blue with nice big pink/red eyes out in the light or more of an emerald green with bluish tint in the shade. It is fun to play with these chalices in different lighting around the tank.

As far as prices, it is crazy sometimes. I was pretty surprised to see that melting pot go for so much. I have not seen much of it since...anyone got a picture of it recently???

But, who am I to talk or judge, which I don't really do when it comes to prices. I bought the first ever auctioned LE Red Watermelon for some crazy price 2+ years ago...$370ish as I recall. That is the most I have paid for a coral. Now fish, that is a different story, I;ve spent more than I care to talk about on a number of my fish...and you can't frag them to get your initial investment back, lol ;).

Here's a shot of my "no name" chalice that is similar to the reverse watermelon morph. Its the one with the larger orange mouth next to the EME.

The picture of the BGM on Tyrees site is horrible. That part of tyrees frag is the part that was growing on the side and partially underneath. It wasn't getting adequate light. Its a very bad picture. Victors picture is much nicer.
