tyree most wanted capricornis

Fliger;

The coral I just posted is from the second colony in your last post :) I know the guy's name who is selling frags from both, but won't post it here. I have been to his house and seen both colonies and they are clearly not the same coral, though both are definitely awesome colonies. I cannot post photos from his tank because he specifically asked me not to. The one that I have is the one I believe comes close to the "Leng Sy" original. The other one is a very awesome plating monti with blue polyps, but it does not have the unusual growth pattern (or other attributes like purple rim, white polyps, etc).

Bonsainut,

Awesome, thanks. I have three plates from him and all seem to be doing ok. Not sure about the one that broke. Anyway he's very nice - he also sent me to deep water balis that both died b4 reaching my house. He said he'd make good next time I'm in LA.

I really like the plate from the first auction. That one and the orange cap have already started good growth in just 2 weeks.

It really really wasn't that green when I recieved it. It was placed about 24" down from 1600 watts of ushio 20,000k bulbs. The purple rim is really starting to come back. You really can't see it in the picture. It is about 3/4" wide. I think it will start to turn green I now have it about 10" below the lights.

Mike,

They will loose color during shipping stress. I just fragged two that are going out on Wednesday and I can see the color difference after I frag them already. I think they just slime some of their color off. I noticed the same thing with the green slimer acro.

IMO nothing brings out the green color back like Actinics. I know it's hard to do on a deep tank though. but 20ks should give you very nice color as well. Give us a picture update in a month or two.

Here is a picture of the two frags that are going out.

I will post a picture of an undisturbed young mother colony on my next post.

Not a great shot but you can see the color.

I had a harder time than normal getting my frag to settle in. I glued it in place but it seemed to take a month or so before it began to encrust. Now that it is settled in it is starting to grow nicely.

Very nice size and shaped colony.

Are the polyps the same color as the back ground tissue? It's hard to tell from the picture since it's not a close up, but it looks like they are the same green color.

This thread has got lots of new postings.

Reefer on a Budget,

I personaly have no plans to sell the Rafael Monti as a LE. Rafael has 4 colonies of it. It will be ubiquitous soon. I am experimenting with the fragment I got from him to see if I can reproduce the exact uinique growth that the Leng Sy's colony had.

Steve

I hate to take this thread in yet another different direction but could you share some of your techniques for influencing growth patterns in this frag or others.

Thanks
Joe

Joe,

If you don't mind me putting in my 2 cents on this one.

I have recently tried to go back to compare notes, images on different colonies kept under different lights and water current condition and cannot see any situation where this coral would not produce ridges.

In all cases this coral has eventually produce ridges or projections. My observations of other similar Montipora species like the orange or red morphs (Which are most likely other species) would either form slight ridges really grooves running radially from the center to the edges or stay smooth bowl like, no matter what size the colony eventually reached.

And that's what I got, IMO Joe.not

I just got a frag of this from Rafael...It looks great! It looks even better than in the pictures in this thread...and his mother colony is amazing....along with every other coral he has.

It's a huge advantage not to have something go through shipping stress.

Thanks Rafael!:D

Combining diffent Montipora color morphs

Combining diffent Montipora color morphs

Been playing with combining my Green with Purple Edge (Tuberculosa?) together with a different color morph of orange (capricornis?). I have 5 or 6 different orange/red color morphs and so far found one that is compatible with the Green P/E. They will butt up against each other but as far as I can tell not actually fuse together. In the case that they donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t accept each other they burn one another.

I have seen wild caps come in with two different color morphs that looked fused so I think it is very possible that it can happen. I also have two different Acros that I confirmed are fused together. These where frags that I attached on the same rock and eventually fused their new growth that skirted onto the rock. Unfortunately they are almost the same color.

Any one else trying this?

Rafael

I am trying that, my green cap has been growing out of control so the last time I hacked it down I also threw a medium chunk of orange joshi cap in the middle. growing but not fused yet either. Tracy Gray has a lot of orange and green caps growing next to each other.

I think GARF is doing this.

one more...go to GARF and do a search for Montipora Capricornis to find the article.
