reaper it would probaly be easier for u to fly here get it and take it back with you that way you could see what you are getting

Not only that... but you could likely sneak something back over in a film canister, or other water-tight container that might be able to pass through a metal detecor on your person ( ) rather easily, if you're a cool customer at custom's... or so I've heard. ;)

Ok so I'm confused. It seems everyone who claims to have the real "Leng Sy" claims to have gotten it from Mike Paletta. When did he lose his and when was the last time he gave some one a frag?

As far as I know, Mike Paletta still has his Leng Sy. When he was here in August, he showed pictures of it during his presentation. He also showed what it looked like in other tanks that he had traded to.

Thanks,

Scott

i'm not saying who told me this. it's part of a PM i recieved from someone who claimed they had the Leng Sy cap.

yeah i know what you're saying about the leng sy. I used to go to steve's a lot as well and buy some LE's off of him. He told me that it's gone forever too, and that mike paletta's leng sy is not the real one. everyone says diff things so i guess there is no way anyone can be 100 percent sure that is is the real leng sy. but as of now it is still a really bright colored cap and if it is not the true leng sy it is the closest thing to it.

From the Reef Farmer web site;

Update Year 2003 - After searching for 6 years we have come to the conclusion that the origianl Leng Sy coral was lost in captivity. No one that Steve Tyree sent fragments to, still has a living section of this coral. Leng Sy is still looking for the coral. Buyers should be aware that there has been at least two reef aquarists in recent years that have been claiming that they have or 'might have' a fragment of this original Leng Sy cap.. These claims have not been proven to be true. There has also been many claims that certain corals are just like the Leng Sy coral because they have a purple edge and are green. The original Leng Sy had the ability to develop extensive nodule growths on its surface. Not every species of Montipora can develop these extensive nodules. In addition to this, the purple edge on the Leng Sy was about 1 inch wide.

That kind of sums it up for me.

But does Paletta have any reason to lie. Either way the ones that are originating from him and the Japanes ones are both beautiful and at least pretty damn close. I'd love to see the one in Mikes tank.

im sure it's already been mentioned in this thread but in case you havent gone through the x pages here is the story in a few lines.

mike paletta never lost his coral. due to a monti nudi attack it was thought by mike that he had lost the coral. turns out a tiny portion of the coral was still alive and was grown out again, to a large colony.

so for all the naysayers, leng sy is alive and kicking it.

GarfValunteer,

Did Mike say if that coral in the picture was from the Leng Sy coral or a Leng Sy like?
The reason that I am asking is because I sent him a frag of my PE end of year 2003 and as I have stated before did not come from the Leng Sy lineage. Just wondering if it might be pictures of my frag after it grew out. In close to a years time it would have grown quite nicely.
Mike did tell me that he still had a piece of the Leng Sy coral back in 03 when we did the trade.

We have lost most of the images that went with this thread. Here is one of the old ones I had here for reference:

This was about a two inch frag. You can see the ridge and projections already forming even at this relatively small size.

Its been alive and kicking for a long time. Mike gave me a frag of the orginal and I have several nice size colonies of it.

Sanjay, do your colonies have the requisite 1 inch purple edge, contrasting polyps, and nodules that Steve mentioned about the original? TIA...

keep in mind, the colony shown in leng's tank was placed a few inches from the surface of the wafer and was receiving direct flow. depending on light and flow, the purple edge/nodules will vary.

Last month, Mike Palleta did a presentation, at the MASLAC meeting. Mike had some really cool pic of his tank.
Among us Leng Sy, Tracy gray, Tyree and other members from OC club were there, and Mike at one point brought it up the pic of Tyree most wanted cap.

Mike Palleta: " Amazing what photo shop can do this days, I do have this coral and I got mine from Leng Sy, and mine does NOT look like the pic."

Nobody including Leng Sy or Tyree, disagreed with Mike Palleta
We all saw what Mike's cap looks like and they look identical of what I and other hobbyists have, Tyree have been at my house several times in the past and never made any comments that my cap could be the same coral, I guess he didn't recognize what I had after all, or did he???
Either way, now we know that this coral still around, and there are plenty out there for everybody

I got a huge colony of that cap & it has the nodules growing upward. Come to find out the frag from which this colony was grown out from was acquired from you, Pucci. I bought it from a local reefer breaking his system down in april. He got the frag from you & grew it out to a very large colony in a little over two years before I acquired it from him.

In a post a month ago Shawn Bennett put up this picture of his cap also aquired from Pucci. He mentioned it was originally from Japan. In my opinion this cap looks just as nice if not nicer than any pics I have seen of the Leng Sy. JMO.

Sanjay,

If the one you have is from the same lineage then most of us down here in northern Va have the same one. Bill(Nemo) and I got some frags from you when he went up to see your tank back in 98-99. I have grown this baby into several large colonies and sold/gave them away to many of the reefers around here.

I don't keep this coral any more due to space constrain in my 180g SPS but I will dig out some old pics and post them here later.

I spoke with Tyree a few years back about this coral and he told me to send him a frag so he can ID it for me but I didn't get around to do it. I have always thought this is the same one but never make a big deal of it. It is a nice cap even if it is not the real Lengy one. :)

The purple edge is not one inch but reaches 1/2-3/4" in some places. The egde looks purple that far is because of the growth of the nodules that also have a purple tip to them.

The nodules are clearly a function of water flow and light. I have this coral in 3 different places in my tank and the most nodules are when this coral is right at the top with strong water flow. In fact it wont even cup there and grows as a thick plate.

The one with the least flow has almost no nodules, to the point I have a hard time convincing people its the same coral. I know it is because I made the frags from the same peice.

I will take pics later after the batteries charge up.

The only way this is not the orginal one from Leng is if Mike lied about it. There is no reason for him to do so.. I got this peice from him way back when he got a peice from Leng. I have been able to keep it going for a long time in my systems and even had a huge one in the penn state tank that became a victim to a leaky XM lamp (a hole in the lamp envelope allowed UV to leak through and destroyed this coral).

Yes, john if you gyus in the DC/VA area got it from me its the same one.:D Now you can mark it up and make a fortune.:D :D Just make sure I get my share !!

Sometimes I really cannot beleive the hype and mania that gets created by marketing !!! Enjoy the corals for what they are rather than a peice of aquisition, and share them with others.

OK, Can I get a frag of this from you or anyone that has it available? Have always wanted one but no one wants to come up off a frag. Please let me know. Thanks.
