Why are people so crazy for this coral, I think its one of the fugliest acros ever and it sells for crazy money. I just dont get in this hobby sometimes when you slap that name on there people go crazy.... just unreal. Am i the only one that thinks that its ugly? I bet if that frag wasnt named put into a frag tank at a lfs with other "LE's" around it people wouldnt look twice at it, darn thing is ugly!!!

i cant be the only one who thinks this is getting out of hand with these le pieces, that coral does nothing for my fancy has no color looks off brown with a touch of red brown with a little white/brown mixed in

I don't think it's ugly. I think it's a nice coral but I would not pay 200 bucks for a one inch frag. If it was in the 20 dollar rack at the LFS I would definitely buy it. I don't get too upset about the name game. If I don't think it's worth the price I don't buy it.

It's all marketing and more power to someone who can hype something market it and get people to pay the high prices in this economy. That's some serious creativity.

I saw some canadian reefer's pic of his red dragon colony here and had to get one despite the "red dragon" price. I swear the branches on this thing is much thinner than a toothpick. I still have my fingers crossed.
I agree with the whole "le" thing now. I saw "crown jewel" acro just added to the le reeffarmers website and laughed at the fact it was a regular austera acro i see at the wholesalers.

If you haven't into the hobby long enough, you will soon realize. This hobby is all about trends. Not only corals but also methodologies and equipement. Everything come in as waves. DSB, BB, T5, LED, carbon dosing, cone skimmers, Zevoit, ULNS, etc. You will see massive migration to these Big Things when they initially pop up. Similarly for corals. The acan craziness (literally every acan was $300 .1") a year or so ago was now moved to chalice. If you have the right marketing idea to create the hyde, that's what people will follow and continue to push it.

Whether the red dragon is ugly or unique is very objective. :)

Excellent point and I am as guilty as anyone about being tempted to jump on the bandwagon!:fun2:

Well I think in some way's you are wrong, but that has to do with opinion and what kind of corals you're interested in collecting. This coral definitely caught my eye, I believe back before it was even a tyree LE.

For me growth pattern is very important, as it color. I really do like the growth pattern on this acropora. The white polyps on the pink/red body is pretty neat, too.

From what I have heard the color of this coral varies a lot depending on the tank.

It is definitely worthy as a high end piece - but not a $200 high end piece.

I would really like to add a thin branching acro like this to my collection but it really has to come down in price a lot.

I have a frag going right now and I agree with pretty much the consensus. Its not the nicest color'd acro out there, but the growth form and species is pretty rare and exotic. N

Nice but not as nice as the price right now.

Where's the red come from though I see no red or any color from all the photos I've seen, yes I'll say the growth pattern is somewhat unique but it's just no way this coral should be worth that much money

CITR Red Dragon (~ 3" across), 1 year of growth from 1/2" frag. 14K 400W Geismann lighting

Compare: LA pink panther (~ 4" across), 4 years of growth from 1" frag

Both pics "through the glass" with a Nikon D80/18-135 mm lens; Photoshop adjustments = cropping, smart sharpen, and light level (< 20% change)

Oh I like this. It's quite artistic. Kind of reminds me of a underwater bonsai (so?) Tree. I would have one. The price is quite steep, but then again I did spend $400 on a hybrid, sterile, gecko LOL but he has one heck of a sweet personality and awesome red color! Back on topic, I think its a "Beauty in the eye of the beholder" deal. Kind of like the fact that some of us like The MonaLisa and others don't.

I think it's very cool, but once again, not red in the slightest. When it gets cheaper I would score one.
I have seen pics of that coral from dark pink to the above light pink, but never red.

I have seen many pics of this coral, I like it and think it is a beautiful acro; but I have yet to be able to justify a reason to pay $200 + for a frag of it. I would be willing to pay $100 and justify it by saying that this a rare and has a unique growth patern, etc. The color of it is actually fuchsia, which technically does have red in it, along with pink and purple. When I first heard of the infamous Red Dragon acro, I fully expected to see a flaming red acro. We should just go back to referring to it by it orginal LE name, Firefighter Fuchsia Acro. :)

i agree with that 100 percent, i think its a conspiracy!

I am not sure about conspiracy but I think part of the problem is some hobbyists no longer look at reef keeping as a hobby any more. It's more of a business opportunity for them so they think and act like businessmen. The pricing is simply a reflection of how they maximize return and there is no incentive for them to lower the price which will cut into profit. But it's really not for me to judge how much they want to sell their corals.

Yeah I can live with fuchsia as the color (in some pics), though the pic above is just light pink. But just having red as a constituent of fuchsia doesn't mean crap, last time I checked purple had red as a constituent color also. It's either red or it's not red.

I don't personally take any offense at people naming coral and getting huge money out of them. That coral is indeed pretty rare at this point, pay it or don't but don't bang on the guy who can sell it for more than you care to pay. $275 grand for a Ferrari is way more than I care to spend but it doesn't make it wrong to sell them for that much. If the market will bear the price then it would be stupid to sell it for less.
