I just added 7 fish to my tank last weekend (2 False Percs, 2 Carpenter Wrasses, and 3 Firefish Gobies). They join a Royal Gramma. I removed and sold a Yellow Tang to make room for these new fish.

Now I have the opportunity to get a large Purple Tang and a Coral Beauty from a friend. That would pretty much max out my livestock I would think.

Question is....how long should I wait before adding additional fish? I have been watching my water quality and haven't seen any spikes in ammonia, etc. This might be due to having the Yellow Tang in there so the bacteria to handle a large bio-load was already in the tank

How long would you feel comfortable waiting (assuming no water quality issues arise)? The person getting rid of them wants the fish gone asap but I am thinking maybe a few weeks to a month or more if possible. Maybe I'm crazy?

For the sake of the other fish I would say sooner rather then later. Get the shock of change out of all their systems at once. If you have a good skimmer I wouldnt worry about the bio load. How big is the purple though?

I wasn't very clear on that. The Yellow Tang had to go to make the addition of new fish possible due to the agressiveness of a Yellow Tang...not because of his size.

Purple Tangs are complete bastards compared to a yellow so if aggression is a concern I wouldn't add the Purple, he'll drive your fire fish nuts and possibly to thier deaths.

If you DO add these 2 other fish, I'd make a rock wall to separate some of the tank so the newly stressed fish don't go nuts.

Ok, ok...I screwed up on the title of this thread. When I realized it, it was too late to change.

mthedude...thanks for the advice on the Purple Tang. I hadn't read that about them and if he's going to be a problem then I'll just pass on him.

Is the Coral Beauty ok with a reef? I've read that they are reef-safe "with caution"...

They been known to eat LPS and polyp coral like zoanthids. It just depends on if you're lucky or not.

The Coral Beauty is in a reef tank now but I'll have to find out what corals are in that tank.

Thanks.

FYI.....the Yellow tang is doing GREAT in his new diggs. Thanks again for the deal! Good luck with the new additions!

Guess I am too late but while being reef safe for like 90% of people my CB was a royal pain. It killed snails, picked at corals and clams. It was my very fist SW fish so I didn't know how bad it was until it was gone. Keep an eye on it.

jloss...good to hear the tang is happy and healthy!

I guess I'm on the fence now with these fish. They would be free but it doesn't sound like they would be the best additions. Since the CB is already in a reef tank I'm not terribly concerned about him. The PT though gives me pause. Guess I have to think on it some more.
