Ugly Lights

So Serv wants new lighting for the fish tank, but everything I've seen has been really industrial and ugly. I'm not wanting Tiffany crystal here, but some lighting options that don't look like sweaty men build stuff under them would be nice. Anyone got anything to share?

He's looking at the metal halides first or the T5's depending on what tank we settle on next.

geissemen fixtures are pretty sexy, they have a nice greyish gunmetal color and I also really like the look of the sfilgoi halide/t5, I think the xr6 is the model Im thinking of. They are however, very pricey.

the ATI Powermodules are sweet lights. They look pretty contemporary and me being a girl as well,I like the clean look of the light fixture :) It's a T5 lighting setup so if he decides to go that route then I'd choose ATI. I'm actually gonna be getting one for my next tank upgrade :) Good luck on your search!

Really even the most stylish lights still have an industrial look about them (ATI,Gman,etc.). The best way to get a funiture quailty look is to build a canopy or have one built for you. You can have it match the furnishings house. If your not an accomplished funiture maker/finisher then have it made. Nothing looks worse than a hokey home made stand/canopy.

I'm actually wondering if there is a way to take a standard light fixture that matches the house, then fitting it with a halide bulb. What do I have to look for to do that, what problems should I look out for?

I actually went the opposite direction. I was originally going to build a wood canopy but decided I didn't want all that additional bulk. I am completely satisfied with the look and quality of my Geissemen Spectra fixture.

It may be possible to rewire and replace the necessary hardware on a standard light fixture but the problem you will run into is that its not designed for all that additional heat. I would not recommend it.

You might try looking for a double ended halogen fixture. These generally have a wide flat spot where the socket is mounted where you might be able to retrofit a HQI or mogul socket. Since the halogens run hot, heat shouldn't be a problem. I would also look at getting some reflector material that you could cut to fit the fixture to optimize your light output.
