UL Listed Lights

What does UL listed mean. I have found lights that are for about 700 w/ 1 250 MH, 2 64 T-5's, but then places like aquatraders and people on ebay have them for like 250 but they arent ul listed. Would it be worth that much extra to get ul listed?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories.

Companies send them products to be "UL" listed, meaning UL has certified that the product meets proper requirements for whatever you need it to do. In other words, they certify that products are built properly. Say a garage mechanic builds light fixtures, but knows very little about electricity and does not put a case ground on the frame. UL would catch this if the product was sent in, the manufacturer would make corrections and send in another sample for re-certification. Most reputable stores will not sell home products that are not UL listed. If it gets plugged in, it really should be UL listed. Your life should mean more to you than a few bucks.

Underwriter Labs....this means that the labs have either tested them OR the manufacture has tested and met all the UL requirements. USED to mean quality product that was "certified" safe etc etc ..........

HOWEVER, this does not mean that non-UL listed are unsafe...some are good, and some, well, are just a fire waiting to happen.....
