I've read threads were people have removed every trace of settled detritus and that quickly resulted in RTN/STN. Could it be that SPS need a little detritus in the system?

I think it has more to do with nutrient levels

I haven't heard that. Now its not the only cause but ULNS often will get RTN from high alk with low nitrates...
