i have a male and female
i have had them for over a year
i bought them from Tony from reef exotics at www.acropora.net
no quarintine, just placed straight inthe display tank
they are about 4.5 inches
they eat flakes, pellets, and frozen food,
they are fead 1-2 times per day sometimes skip a day depending how often i am home, but they feed like crazy and are so fat that i fear they are gonna blow up.
They are in a 90 gallon reef with lots of rock and corals
i have not any disease problem with them whatso ever.
they have never nipped at any of my livestock.
The only aggresive tank mate would be a large hippo tang that is inthe tank.
They do require very good quality water so i would not recomend them to beginners.

Ah, forgot to answer the maint/water quality question.

I have a pretty poor WC routine; but, I do skim rather wet and replace .5G to 3G of SW a day - depending on how wet I go that day.

I also run a Turbo-Twist 6x UV varying between 100gph to 300gph - depending on my mood. Definately running it at 100gph after any new fish are added to the tank.

No sump, no fuge. Carbon and PhosGuard in a reactor off and on.

Do you guys think a female watenabei would do well in a 85 gallon? 32" x 25" x 25"? It will have a 30 gallon sump/fuge.

The tank will have about 2280GPH flow as well so it will give the angel a good workout.

I will have a corallife needle wheel skimmer rated to 125 gallons

I'm setting up an automatic water changer system. It will change ~30 gallons of water a week. Four days a week this will be done with two pumps. First my automatic topoff will shutoff, then another level controller will switch on and when the float sensor goes low it will start filling with new NSW (which will have been mixed with a venturi like powerhead and heated to the current temperature an hour before). The water in the main tank will be slowly removed by another pump, that will turn on and draw about 7 gallons of water. This will allow automatic water changes keeping the water mostly clean all week. I will also have activated carbon and phosphate absorbing media, as well as a large refugium with chaeto and LS.

I'm hoping that will be enough for a clean tank.

I'm also going to feed three times a day, once in the morning before work, after work, and before bed.

Tankmates will include a pair of ocellaris (I have these already, they're very peaceful with each other and other fish) and some gobies.

What kind of Genicanthus? Genicanthus melanospilos

What is it's gender? I started out with a pair but my asfur angel started going after the male and he got sick and died.

How long have you had it? I had my female for about six months before the asfur started chasing her as well so I gave her away to a friend. I wouldn't keep one with the larger, more aggressive angels again.

Where did you buy it from? Jeff's exotic fish.

What special quarantine routines? Nope.

What is it's current size? NA

What do you feed it? PE mysis, spirulina flake, formula 1 & 2, and other meaty seafoods. both fish ate everything.

What is the feeding schedule? Twice a day.

What size, design, setup of a tank do you have? 6'x2'x2' 180 reef.

Any diseases that you've had? None.

Reef safe so far? Yes.

Tankmates and aggressiveness? With the exception of the asfur nothing bothered the Geni's and they left everything else alone.

Any other advice? Dont mix with large angels!

and most importantly, pictures!!! Sorry, no pix.

What kind of Genicanthus?

Watanabei Pair.

Where did you buy it from?

Excellent local fish store.

What special quarantine routines?

Out of the bag, into the tank and they ate in about 20 minutes. They never hid or seemed stressed at all.

What is it's current size?

3.5" on the male, 3 on the female. They grow slow IMO. The male has streamers that are an extra inch long. I have had mine 15-18 months now, and they have gotten fatter, but have not really grown all that much... maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.

What do you feed it?

Anything. Mostly Formula II Pellets, but they also get some formula variety pack cubes, some aqua yum cubes and some mysis. 50-75% of their diets are pellets though. I have never seen them refuse any type of food.

What is the feeding schedule?

Whenever I walk by the tank, I might put some in. Some days, they don't get anything if I am not home. Other days, they get fed a bunch. Most often, I feed about twice a day.

What size, design, setup of a tank do you have?

Had mine in a standard 90G SPS tank. They will need to go into the 210 soon.

Any diseases that you've had?

Not a one.

Reef safe so far?

Absolutely.

Aggressiveness?

Not a bit, unless you are a mysis shrimp or a pellet. They are very tolerant of other fish, yet they are not pushovers. My male will hold his own with anybody, but he never starts anything. The female is the same way.

Any other advice?

Genicantus are notorius for being poorly collected. Be sure and get a quality specimin that has been decompressed properly from the depths that they live. If you get a good one, you should enjoy them for many years.

Pics
I take terrible pics, but here a few of mine. Sorry for all of the coralline on the glass - those of you who pine for more coralline algae can come over and scrape my tank for a while and them be careful what you wish for.

HTH,
P.S the G.melanospilus is called the 'blackspot' because the male has a blackspot in the centre of his chest.

Mark

I thought I'd mention that in addition to the Bellus Female, I will soon have a Genicanthus MALE. I nice, healthy, and EATING one was at my LFS today. He's on hold, and will be going through QT. I'll let you know how it goes...

that sounds awesome.

I've been checking out a LFS's not for sale Blackspot angelfish in his reef prop tank. It's really small, and over 3 months it hasn't gotten any bigger. It's a beautiful fish, looks dumb though straight on because of its eyes.

I'm thinking of going with a blackspot for my next tank.

koden,

I am ordered from fish supply, http://www.fishsupply.com/cgi-bin/f2/common/index.cgi?dbname=f2

I know I am wrong for not QTing......the male and female have been staying in the rockwork all weekend. I have them in with a Blonde Naso, a Purple, and a luetinant tang, also a gold stripe maroon clown and a psuedochromis. The tangs are all over the tank all the time so this maybe why they are staying in the rockwork I hope. As soon as I can snap some shots I will.

I think I will be getting a Bellus Female for my 82 gallon tank... think it will be ok in my 32" x 25" x 25"?

"SwallowTail Angel - Genicanthus melanospilus
Also known as: Lamarck's Angelfish"

Okay, so are you saying that my "Japanese Swallowtail" isn't really a Japanese Swallowtail; but, black-spot angelfish? Since it looks identical to the Genicanthus melanospilos listed in the photo on your first link and the photo on LA. Any pics of a true "Japanese Swallowtail" so I can compare???

I knew there was a reason I hated common names... ;)

Dwain

This is what is consider the "Real Japanese Masked Swallowtail"
