Unable to connect to PIII from Windows Vista

I am running PIII and using PLC 5.0.2.5 to connect using TCP/IP. Somehow the status bar says it is connected but then the right hand menus never populated. It would appear to be trying to do something but after a while I will get communication error 28. The computer is running Windows Vista Home edition.

I also have an older laptop that is also running Windows Vista Home but that one connects fine.

So I suspect it might be some settings on my new laptop, wondering if anyone has run into this issue?

Thanks!

To make sure that I understand. An older laptop with a network cable plugged into it connects fine but if you were to take the cable out of one computer and plug it into the next than it will not connect.

Actually both laptops are on the same wireless network. They do not physically connect to the PIII controller via cable.

Try attaching a networking cable to both computers. That way you know whether or not it's a setting for your network settings in general or your wireless settings. I suspect that there is something going on with a Firewall someware thinking that the PL is something nefarious.

boboxx, I try to connect one at a time. In fact, my old laptop is usually off, I only use that for connecting to my PIII now.

bbart12, are you suggesting I can connect a network cable directly from a computer to the back of the PIII? This has never occurred to me. Not sure how to set that up. I will try to put them both on a wired network and see if that fixes it.

Thank you both for your suggestions!

you can dirrectly connect to the P3 but will need a way to assign a IP address to both the P3 AND the computer... it's easier if you leave it on the network.

Can you see if you can access the web interface of the P3 by typing the
http:// IP of P3 in you browser?

Thi will confirm that the issu is with the software (PLC) on the laptop and not the p3

the look into the Visual Studio Runtime and OLE/ActiveX registration your PC is milling a lib or the reis one that is currupted

Unless you have a crossover cable( or no how to make one) you shouldn't be able to connect directly to your pIII but must wireless routers have wired router built in.

Well, I uninstalled visual studio and uninstalled PLC. I then installed the latest version of PLC (5.0.3.2). Btw, I am running fw: 5.02f. I am still unable to get PLC to talk to P3. While in the connection setup window for TCP/IP, I can actually click on "configuration" and have it successfully finding the IP for P3. But after clicking "connect" it just does nothing and after awhile I will get the same communication error 28. Very frustrating.

do you have a antivirus running? if so try to see if it has a network wedge... if it dose dissable the antyvirus completly and tray again.
