Under 220wattsCF 10k (ahsupply.com) and 96wattsCF Actinic 03(ahsupply.com) is it possible to keep any type of clam? Or does it just say..........no way Jose.

Okay, so you have 316watts of PC over your 55g correct? Desera, Squamosa, and a gigas would all do okay. I would leave croceas and maximas alone.

pc lighting watts per gallon doens't mean much of anything, the par rating of the light is fine for the first few inches of water, but drops drastically after that, so if you have a 20" tank, very little light is actually making is to the bottom of the tank... I'd say get higher lighting before a clam

Well, I planned on makeing a spot for one to sit on my live rock (DIY rock) just a few inchs below the surface. I figured 6" down was ok? Think it could work then?

Dont think so. The clams I listed that would do "ok" in your tank are sand dwellers. They should not be in your rockwork, and you do not have enough lighting for croceas and maximas. If you HAVE to try a clam, id recommend a squamosa or a desera clam.

As it says in your signature, "gathering reef equipment and knowledge", I would strongly recommend having all the appropriate reef equipment "gathered" and have as much knowledge as possible before trying a maxima or crocea. The Derasa could be OK if you have a high nutrient (nitrates, PO4, and phytoplankton) tank for the clam to get supplemental nutrients from.

Well the thing is, I'm makeing all my rock, and on alot of it i'm putting bowls in it for sand for some plants and stuff. I planned on makeing a bowl at the top for sand for the clam. I am going to have everything before I even fill the tank. I'm makeing my skimmer, live rock, getting a sump and a fuge and all the lighting. The clam will be in sand def. At least 5" of sand deep and a foot long....what ya think?

I think you're better off waiting until you have adequate light for your clam. I know it's tempting, and they are nice, but they require specific care, and I doubt that even in a bowl in the rock at the top of the tank it's going to do as well as it could if you had halides. Also, clams like an established tank, like one that's been up and running stable for 6+ months, so with a new tank you'd still have a long enough wait to want to upgrade your lighting for cooler corals anyways ;)

Derasa and Squamosa can be kept under PC.

not trying to hijack your thread but... I was wondering the same thing. I have a 12g Cube w\ 96 Watts from PC's. This thing is bright as ****!
i have a few corals which require high light that were doing completely fine under 48 Watts, then i added another 48 Watts, now they're going crazy. I have a ton of open space in my tank that i was hoping to throw a clam smack dab in the middle for my center piece. Either that or coem acans. but i'd much rather get a really nice clam. Are Derasa and Squamosa's the only clams for me unless i get halides?

I totally disagree with most of you people. I know plenty that have had maximas and crocea's with PCs for long periods.

I have a hard time believing that my crocea, 24" deep from a 250MH hanging 10 inches above the tank (total distance:34") is getting more light than something sitting 6" under a 96w PC.

MY crocea looks great, and is growing steadily. These things seem to be pretty easy to keep, and I think you guys freak out way too much. (I've had it 8 months now, so its not starving to death)

/end rant.

i'd say don't get a crocea. I know from experience because i "just had to have one" It lived for about 3 months high up in a 55 gallon tank under PC lighting. It overextended a lot and eventually just crapped itself. But hey if your like me you just have to learn the hard way

Well I had 3 Maximas for over a year under PC's in a 55 gal with 330 watts. They didn't grow much until I upgraded to MH's but they did survive.

If you are saving money by doing most everything diy spend a few bucks on halides even if they do servive under lower light they would be 10 times happier and more beautiful under the halides.
