thanks all! i am using a Canon PowerShot SD500 and and Inon D-2000 strobe plus an Inon macro lens on the macro shots.

yes, just photographed it. our guide found a Triton's Trumpet later on at the end of the dive and considered moving it near the starfish but couldn't find it.
 
Don't cut them up and throw them back. Starfish have rather amazing powers of regeneration. You could actually end up making more crown of thorns :eek1: Best thing is to remove them from the water and let them dry up ;)
 
yeah, I don't mess with things when I dive, esp sharp and pointy venomous things :D. FWIW I read that the preferred method to kill them is an injection of a chemical solution. I leave that to the experts. As Bill mentioned, in the past cutting up starfish as a means of population control has caused population explosions after each piece regenerated.
