Unilateral Pop Eye

Have been treating my 6 Line Wrasse numerous times with Melafix over a period of 4+ months with no results, fish has pop eye but as I have read through other threads I see that their are to types of Pop Eye (Unilateral and Bilateral). I'm thinking that my 6 Line has Unilateral due to an injury. Is their a recommended type of treatment for this type of Pop Eye? other than Melafix. Looking for an alternative reef safe treatment as capture has been impossible up to this point for QT treatment. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, HARRY

Reef safe disease "treatments" are typically ineffective, as you've found with the melafix. Is it just one eye that is bulging? Is the eye cloudy or clear?

Sorry SKIPJACK1963, Hijack your thread.

Hi billseef,

I also have the same problem as SKIPJACK1963. My flame angel has one eye popped but it's clear.

Any advice on medical treatment?

Thanks.

Harry,

That sort is usually caused by internal pressure build up, typically from either gas bubble disease or an internal infection. Gas bubble disease will usually affect several fish, as it's a problem of supersatured oxygen in the tanks water that can be caused by the suction side of a pump drawing in air and forcing into solution...so give your pumps and any intakes a good once over for good measure. More likely in the case of one fish, it is an internal infection, which is best treated with an antibiotic such as nitrofuran or maracyn II in a QT. In some instances, I have seen cases where the initial infection was not treated in time and the eye remains bulging after the infection is over. This later would be evident by a bulging eye that neither gets worse or better and shows no other signs of infection.

Bill:

Great info!, will attempt capture for QT treatment, but I'm thinking it may be an old infection as it has not gotten any worse and has not affected any other inhabitants. I will check on the pump issue as well.

Thanks again,

Harry
