Hi all,

I went to my lfs today and brought some new Lysmata shrimp to add to my breeding program. The manager is a friend of mine so he knew I would be interested.

I am unsure of the species. I live in Queensland, Australia. And these shrimp where supposed to have been caught in Far North Queensland. I think the one in the first photo is Lysmata seticaudata (I did not known these where found in Australia) . But I am not sure about the others  any help with the ID of these shrimp would be great:D

Hi

They do look like L. seticaudata.

Is your supplier importing stuff from Europe? Maybe TMC?
If so, they are L. seticaudata.
They are not present in Australia (unless they have become invasive, which I think is a very remote hypothesis).

However, most of this peppermints are so similar that it is not easy to diagnose them just by pics.

I am not familiar with Lysmata species occurring in Australia but they do look like seticaudata to me.

Hi Ricardo,

Thanks for your reply. As far as I am aware we are not permitted to import invertebrates into Australia.

Can you recommend any Taxonomy books or papers that may help me to correctly identify these shrimp?

Thanks
Stan

Hi Stan

This one may help:

Udekem D'Acoz, C.D' 2000. Redescription of Lysmata intermedia (Kingsley, 1879) based on topotypical specimens, with remarks on Lysmata seticaudata (Risso, 1816) (Decapoda, Caridea, Hippolytidae). Crustaceana, 73, 719-735.

If you need any further help, let me know.

Good luck!

Ricardo

Thanks for your help Ricardo I think I have worked out what the 2 species. I am still waiting on a book from the CSIRO library (the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) ( the CSIRO is the scientific research department of the government) to confirm this, but at the moment I think this is what they are.
