Ok, this has got to be kicker. Here I have a nice 12g nano setup for my G. Glaborous together with a yellow-tailed damsel. I just got this mantis about 1.5 weeks ago. Came with the tank and the rock. I've been hearing clicking sounds coming from the tank that I didn't think were coming from my mantis. Her clicks sound like loud "twacks". She is a good size 4". I've been watching her to see if the is making the "pinging" sounds but I couldn't say for sure. Today she was out and about and I could clearly see that she wasn't moving at all but I was still hearing the clicking sounds. Needless to say, they are driving us both crazy. She keeps running around and then holding really still trying to figure out where that clicking sound is coming from. What are the chances tha I've got a hitchiker mantis in a mantis tank? I ahve no idea where the rock came from or how long it's been in the tank. How can I figure out what is making that clicking sound?

Well it could be a Pistol Shrimp, I don't know the difference between the soudns that they make.
Try to find out where the sound is coming from, then you'll know what it is.

Well I think I've managed to find the rock that has the clicking sounds and have moved it to a seperate tank. I think I heard a clicking sound from the new tank. So I'm hopeful I picked the right rock. But I ahven't seen anything alive yet at all. If it's a pistol shrimp, when would they normally come out?

I have 2 pistols that came in on rocks that have NOT left the rocks yet. The first we got has been inside the rocks close to 2 years now and the second about 8 months. They are both only about an inch in length and green. We rarely see them. What you can do is place a pellet or large peice of food in an opening of the rock you know it to be in and sit with a flashlight and hope he is hungry. But i guess if it is really bothering you you can flush it out with soda water into a bucket just to see what it is.
