Unwanted critters go bye bye!

->L<- REEF

About 8 months ago I ordered a 55 gallon package from TBS, great service and even better product. I was amazed at all the life in and on the rock, bein fairly new to marine aquariums I did'nt think much about the possibilities of the damage a Mantis could do. I figured I wanted every available critter (to simulate a real reef) that I could get. (stupid!) Decided I dont want a "real" reef anymore, but i do want to be able to look at the beauty that TBS sends out.
Well with that 55 gollan package that I put in a corner tank with my own design and built sump, Red-Sea skimmer, Cascade filter, and custom sea-life PC lighting I was hooked. So when the "said" mantis destroyed all of my barnacles and (pretty sure) sliced and diced a few other things I was almost wanting not to move on to the next step of this great hobbie. I tried everything to catch or KILL that little @#!$%*! In the mean time I decided to go bigger and worry about it later. I recently set up a 300 gallon acrylic tank with a 135 gallon sump and thought to my self what is going to be the best way to elimnate that mantis so he does'nt make his way into of all of my hard work. Initially I was thinking of quarintining every rock until i get him, but that could take months, today i got a hair up my %*$ and busted out my air compressor and "blow off tool" and experimented with a couple of smaller peices, WORKED LIKE A CHAMP! Got three pistols, a decorator, and a emerald crab to jump off like they was on fire. It didnt seem to affect the rock itself at all, I have'nt gone after MR. Mantis himself just yet cause my new tank is still cycling, but after seein what all the other critters did I feel a whole lot better about my chances of gettin that little %$#&* this time. Oh and I wont be tryin to save the mantis like I was able to save those other critters, so I dont need any info about what to do with him after my 120 PSI knocks the %&*# out of him. :D

Mr. Mantis

Mr. Mantis

Ok, i couldnt take it any more the snappin was just gettin to be too loud, so out came the air compreesor again and lookie what i got this time.

Just a update, Mantis shrimp make Exellent Anemone food. and found out today after gettin that first one that i now beleive there is another one. Will be using the air compressor on every rock as soon as my new tank is done cycling and will find out if its a pistol or mantis. I think the best part of the air compressor method is that you only have to have the rock out of the tank for just a few minutes, and so far have seen no adverse effects on five differant rocks.

I'm going to have to try that. Got a nice 30g compressor sitting handy in the garage, rated at over 250psi... ... talk about the ultimate bl** j*b! :lmao:

Probably send the little bastage shooting across the street. :D

Mantis makes a very interesting pet in a ten gallon with some live rock and sand. You can even add some hardy corals and a couple damsels.

Gave all my rocks a good blow job for the transfer into the new tank, got done to the last rock with just normal hitchhiker stuff (tons and ton s of star fish) and then it happened POP goes the weasle. How are you on this fine day Mr. mantis? Not nice to have known you! Want to go in the house and play with the Anemone?
