Upcoming January Workshops

AquaSump

New member
Hey Everyone,

PetSmiths (one of our sponsored LFS in Bixby) has a couple of workshops scheduled this month. I personally have been to both of these and they are really good. The "Reef 101" workshop is not only good for the beginner but also helps to remind us of best practices we may have gotten away from. The "Build a Sump" is the best! they partner with a local plastic manufacturing company that you order your template and pay for it, then bring it to the workshop and assemble it. Travis supplies all the glue, tools ect to make it work. Last time I built a 60 gallon tank that I use as my frag tank. I know several other OMAS members were there too. Also, it's way cheaper to build a sump yourself if you have been thinking about replacing your current sump with something different.

here is the note from PetSmiths.

Sure thing. I have reached out to get the cost/dimensions ect. of all the kits so people can plan ahead. i'll post it here when i find out.

ok I got all the details on the sump build. Again, I did this last year and it was really fun and you get a great product for a fraction of the price. You will need to order your plastic before hand and then bring it to the sump build where you will put it together. Travis (PetSmiths) will have all the other material including glue, tools ect...

Here's the info:
Step 1> Pick your size. (cost is approx)
SM- 14x26x14 $60
MD- 16x34x16 $87
LG- 20x42x16 $112

Step 2> if you want baffles (plastic between chambers) figure out how many you are going to want and what dimensions. Prices will vary based on size and quantity.

Step 3> Call Wanda at 918 622 9660 (Plastics co. located between 41st and 51st off S. Sheridan - across the street from Sams Club). Give her the size you want and the dimensions and number of baffles you want.

Step 4> Pick up your order from the plastics co. and bring it to PetSmiths the day of the workshop.

I mocked up a couple of types of sumps you could build. I used the medium dimensions. These are just examples, you really can do anything you would like. Just be sure to explain to Wanda what you want when you order. The sponges for the sumps are pretty standard. The have various lengths with a width of 2" or 2.5" and a height of 4". So I would space your baffles 2" apart where you will put a sponge. Here is a standard type sump.

<br />Here is a sump with a built in Refugium. I really like this one. This is the one i'm gonna do.

Question: How do you know how much room you need to leave so when you turn you return pump off to allow you over flow boxs to dran?

IMO it depends on the system. it's going to drain until it reaches your return pipe where air enters the line and stops the vacume. the best way to figure this out is to turn off your pump and sit back and watch. it's also a good test to do to make sure if the power goes off at your home you wont flood. Personally I drill a small hole in my return pipe in the DT just below the water level. that way the increase in water to the sump during power failure is minimal.

Nick,
do you know if the price is discounted for the club?
I am wanting to build a 25 gallon cube for a refug/seahorse tank but i'm not ready for the tank yet and didn't want it just laying around and getting messed up.

Hey Kent - I know the prices for the plastic at the plastic co. is being offered at cost to everyone coming regardless of if they are a club member or not. It's a great opportunity to build your project with help from those who have built lots of these in the past. Bobby Mercado (i'm probably spelling his name wrong) taught us the at the last one. I'm sure some people who have been around for awhile know who he is. He did a really good job teaching and helping everyone.

went by there today and got a price on a 18" square cube with a lid their price was 147.00. I thought it was a little high so i check around theres another place over close to oddballs i'll check with after that i'll just wait till my new stand is ready

I do not know if the prices are better but tulsa plastics is a great place to buy acrylic(we buy a ton from them) they are right off of 31 st.

If you ordered your plastic at plastic engineering you might check with them.
