update....cupramine and dead tangs

First off....thanx for all the replies in my last ich post. Here's what's up.....set up a 29g ht with a 10 gal sump. Added about 15g of new SW and 15g of water from my dt. Add 2 small tangs and gave them a few hrs to settle in, even fed a little and they ate, did not seem stressed at all. So about 2 hrs later I did a half dose of cupramine and all seemed fine. Rigjt before bed I checked and my chocolate tang was on his side and breathing rapidly, he also had quite a few gashes on his side which I assume my kole tang had inflicted on him so i moved him into the sump where hr died. Upon waking up this morning(8hrs later) found my kole tang experiencing the same fate on his side gasping. Did a quick water check and all is norm. I know copper depletes oxygen but shouldn't the water xfer from tank to sump add oxygen as the water falls and breaks the sump water surface?....I also did a copper test which was too low to even register.....any input anyone?

Is the Kole still alive. I'm not familiar with your situation...are you treating for ich or prophylactically? Did you run some carbon through to get rid of copper? What kind of water movement do you have?

I was treating for ich. No carbon,uv, filter, etc...... My return pump from my sump was providing plenty of water movement. Kole was near death when I left for work this a.m.

how much ppm of copper did you add? just to confirm what you mean by 1/2 dose.

also, just to make sure, you didn't add Prime, AmQuel or any other ammonia detox products did you?

Why the reference to prime in this situation? I have used Cupramine always successfully.... Air stone, good flow, sponge filter ....

Reefocd......that's what I used as well......minus the air stone. I'm wondering if they didn't have enough oxygen. I was hoping the overturned water from my tank to the sump would have oxygenated it enough. I did use a sponge I had seeded from my main display sump

Copper and prime is a deadly mix and should NEVER be done.

I personally never had a good experience with cupramine in the past and have since done tank transfer.

Tuskfish......bought a seachem animosity test kit....all was good. Besides my green chromis are still kicking. Now I did read copper will give a false animosity reading but usually on the high side. I also just doses the send 1/2 of the first dose and still I am not reading a copper level of .50

update....cupramine and dead tangs

Now that I think back, I noticed my fox face tang being treated going right up to the air stone and letting bubbles run through gills and then swim off.... I had a 20g qt tank with strong flow and air stone... Fox face and two PJ cardinals survived treatment, doing well in display last 6 months... :) I am suspecting oxygen or ammonia/nitrite in your case. In your next event, I would test nitrite... I am getting good at fishless cycle and testing ammonia and nitrite daily is required... Goodluck!
