UPDATE of your ONYX clowns

phender, good point.

i was not aware LA has only been sellig them for a year. ive only been interested in onyx for about a year.

so thank for your insight.

i use to be in the koi hobby and would spend alot of money on certain japanese breeders with genetic lines that gave babies with a higher probablity of certain charactistics i personally prefer.

so my point is that Rods onyx is that type of breeder or me. when you get juv. pair of onyx, they may or may not dev. the full black dorsal fin and heavy black that prefer. with rods onyx bec he has seen this trait thru many generations, i feel its less of a risk.

i just dont want an onyx with black only between the stripes. just y personal taste.

thank you for all who have replied. keep posting pics! :)

I dont know how to make it any clearer to help you understand.. You keep saying you dont understand what i am saying..

C--quest was a hachery/breeder... They had a pair of clowns they named onyx clowns.. Unless you can trace the clowns back too these two clowns they aint true black onyx clowns..

LA can call them onyx clowns all they want because they look the same and want to charge more for them .. They are not onyx clowns. it is just a label LA put on them..

Guys, guys, guys, me thinks your way overdoing this!!!! For the sake of not using Rods picture without permission take a look at the link. http://rods-reef.com/bigPic.php?prID=5

Now here's my Black Onyx from Liveaquaria and I have permission to use my picture!! As I look at the pictures posted mine is every bit Black Onyx as everone elses. I have had mine for five months and they are as healthy as can be wild caught or not!

you put up a link to my onxy clown that i bought from Rod. she is only 1 year old,her color right now isn't set in stone and she WILL color up and i was assured that she will become a true onxy. i trust Rod and he is a standup guy.

LA doesn't list them as onyx do they? after seeing yours I would buy from them if they look the same. I like the black dorsal fin though, maybe I'm an old fashioned kind of guy :)

Let me add that that pic from my site is the very last clown (of hundreds) that was available after all the others have been sold and cherry picked.. Its a "cull" if you will. Most of the pics of my juvies in this thread are clowns that were left over.. 98% of them to get the black dorsal ( an onyx trait IMO :D), and overall deep black coloration.. 98% seems to breeding pretty "true" to me.

you chose to use one of the best of LA onyx and compared it to one of my worst (slowest to color) onyx.

That came out wrong.. I by no means meent to say that my clowns are better looking than LA's clowns or any others. I have seen a lot of awesome looking wild clowns lately, like the one above!! gorgeous fish!

I just ment it was an unfair comparison using one of my juvies as a comparison :).

BTW, I agree that this all gets overdone. If ya like the clowns and service from venor X buy their clowns, if ya like the ones from vendor Y,, buy their clowns.

well stated rod.

again just my personal opinion. rods clowns are more reliable with there pattern and depth of color. and less risk of diseases. the parents have a proven genetic trait over many generations.

for the price of onyx. i just feel its less risky than with other vendors. you might be lucky and get the best onyx clown pair ever from anohter vendor and than you might not. its just a risk i dont want to take. i feel its less of a risk with rods clowns.

i use to be a serious collector of high end jap kois. i bought only from the top breeders in japan. you pay for the potential of the babies over proven generations. with other vendors you just take a chance. its the same premise i belive.

but to all who have an onyx pair. they are all nice i think. if you dont wnat them il take them :)

Shred5 - Do you think "onyx" is just a common name stamped onto this color percula, or do you think there is a genetic difference? I see your point very clearly. It's much the same as Tyree's naming his corals LE. You can't call any other piece (no matter how spot on similar it is) LE unless you can trace it back to Tyree.

I just wonder, is this onyx coloring a genetic difference, or just some hatchery putting a fancy name on a freak of nature color splash. Honest questions because I have no clue. :)

Fahz - I'll be at both next year too. :D We'll meet up for sure this time.

I think it is being used by many as a common name but should not. Until LA started using the name onyx on their Solomon island clowns the only ones around were originally form c-quest and a few breeders that eneded up with clowns from c-quest... The fish is definitely not a different species of clownfish... It is just a different color variation of a true percula...

Kind of like I said before.. About tyree le purple monster, sunset or other coral.. There are other companies selling purple monster corals because of a color trait and to capitalize on the purple monster nameââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ How many times do you see a misinformed person going look at my superman monti I just got and someone goes I hate to tell you thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s not a superman monti but cool anyways.

As far as I know the only people that still have true onyx clowns are inland aquatics.. That is where Rod got his from.. There are a few breeders that have a few pairs now .

I also think the give away is that LA calls them Black Onyx True Percula Clownfish, meaning they are really a true percula with the onyx coloration, they do not call them black true onyx percula. kind of a play on words.. if they put the true infront of onyx more people would have trouble with that..
