Some recent pics of my 12 gallon aquapod. The tank has been up for about 4 months. I'm new to this so be kind.

Final FTS

It looks good. I see you modded the outlet to a dual outlet. Any other changes made to the tank? How are you running your rear sections? What's in what?

Some very nice coral pieces;) Aquascape is right on! Looking great.

My only criticism is the mixture in sand color. I think a whiter sand would bring the colors out more with the contrasting black background.

Thank you all. In the back I have filter floss in the first chamber. The second chamber I modded into a fuge with some chaeto from Toyota Guy. I'm running purigen and chemi-pure in the third chamber and the MJ900 in the fourth with the heater. This version came with the dual loc-line outlets so that was not a mod. As for the sand...not my choice. The tank was a gift from my fiancee who went to Eddies and said "What do I need". That was what they gave her. I don't mind the dual colored sand but I agree that white would make a nice contrast. She has also requested that I put up some pictures of her favorite animals. So without further ado here are Starry the starfish and George the cucumber.

The cuke is really cool. I can't get a good picture of him though. He crawled up in the corner the first night he was in the tank and hasn't moved since. I guess he's getting a nice buffet up there!

Nice tank!

Interesting how the 12 gal AP has 4 chambers. I recently purchased the 24 gal AP and can only recall 2 chambers:

1) overflow "chamber" that comes stuffed with 2x large blue rectangular sponge blocks (great at trapping detritus, but given that I will most likely neglect cleaning them, I opted to remove them) and a bag of those ceramic "rigatoni"-like pieces (left in - for now).

2) Return section where there is a small pump (havn't changed it out for any larger pump yet). I also threw in a bag of carbon (will use chemi-pure next go around) and a polyfilter. Threw my heater in here.

Since I have the 64W compact fluorescent system (enclosed hood), I don't see how I could make a fuge out of it or add a skimmer of any type. There seems to be plenty of room for other "things", but not sure really how else I want to "mod" it.

Any suggestions?

TA,

If you're looking for a skimmer check out sapphireaquatics.com They make a skimmer that fits in the chamber while still being able to close the hood. I've heard only good things about them. Secondly if you want to make a fuge mod I believe you'd have to make another chamber with acrylic. Then you simply cut the vinyl backing on the tank (comes off real easy) and put a light on the back. Also a lot of people switch the stock pump for a MJ1200. Less wattage = less heat = good! Check nano-reef.com for other mods. There are a good number of people with the 24 gallon AP that have lots of good ideas!

I agree with Scott the sapphireaquatics makes a skimmer for the 24 gal pod that everyone raves about. Soon to make a 12 gal pod model. Whenever it comes out I will be sure to get one.

Being that TA's tank is already full and not easy to drill the back wall I recommend swapping the single outlet for a dual with loc-line or use a Hydor. I also prefer the Mj's as return pumps in the nano's.

He's right on about the fuge mod there is several threads in the nano forum for creating a fuge in one of the rear sections.

I have considered adding a 3rd fan to my 12 gallon AP to help boost evaporation. Another Mod seen in several threads. Currently evap is very low to little or otherwise known as none. I would like to keep my ph more stable with kalk and better oxygenate the water with a skimmer.

I can't wait until the sapphire aquatics skimmer comes out. I talked to the builder and apparently he hand makes each one so he's a little backed up now and the nanocube is more popular so he told me it's going to be a while before he develops the AP 12 version. If I had the AP 24 that would be a definite purchase though.

Yeah...was following a thread over there(nanoreefs).....didn't post there, but I was curious about the water level required for the skimmer(s) to work properly....did you see his pics? If they were even semi-accurate, I thought to myself how the heck do I keep the level that low (appeared about half full)! I'd be willing to shell out the $80-90 for the AP24 for sure....still may.

.........or use a Hydor. I also prefer the Mj's as return pumps in the nano's.
using the stock pump, but I do use the hydor....like that little gizmo! :D

Not really sure I want or even need more flow....nothing but zoas, shrooms, rics, kenya, nepthea, and anemone (clowns to follow). I like the gentle flow...as opposed to my 65g with ~60x turnover. :eek2:

Another easy mod I've heard of is to cut pieces of acrylic or plastic and glue them over the middle and lower water intake grates. This gives better surface skimming and supposedly cuts down on surface film.

I assume the AP12 also comes with those sliding doors used for blocking the lower/middle intakes....while they work to some degree, they are by no means water tight; and therefore, almost impossible to maintain a low water level in the "sump" section.

Even so, I'd say that with the lower/middle intakes block, I still get fairly good surface skimming.

Theres just something about cutting and gluing a new AP24 that bothers me.

At the moment, I'd like to stick to more non-invasive mods! ;)

You must have misunderstood me. Check on nano-reef.com for mod ideas. There are no sliding doors on my model but what I'm speaking of is to take an extra piece of plastic from something like and old cassette case and glue that to the grates. Don't worry I wouldn't suggest cutting and pasting a new tank!
