My main computer is a iMac which is located in my office. It picks up a wireless signal from from router which is halfway across the house. If my imac is wireless how will I update the firmware on my apex? Should I just plug my windows laptop into my router and do it like that or is there another way?

Yes, just for firmware updates. In fact you could use the Mac as well - just whatever platform you use the controller needs a hardwired connection to the router. Best is that both the PC and controller are hardwired but minimum is the controller is hard wired to the router.
