Upgrade from 5gl to 10gl?

For my 5gl I have a 70w MH and the 6025 tunze nano stream, live filter that is spilling into the tank, corals, shrimp, and two gobies, among other things. The tank is super healthy, running over a year and I recently added the light and tunze. The sweet powerhead is too much for the small tank. I can always use more room, with these upgrades I though I'd try to go bigger. I want to have the tank in the same spot. I use the water from my larger tank to change the nano if that helps? Any tips?

hi! yes, definitely use your current water... make sure you temp/ph/sg match the new water to your current water, and maybe even ca/alk match it if you have sps.

i think the 6025 is going to be too much for a 10 also. i've read that they're overkill for anything smaller than a 20.

moving a 5 is going to be a bit tricky. fill up the 10 about 1/4 of the way with new water, add half of your water so the 10 is about half full. make sure it circulates for a minute. start moving over livestock. if you have anything sesitive, you might want to acclimate it.

for example, i just moved from a 58 to a 90, and acclimated my blue linckia to the new tank.

once everything is moved over, in the 1/2 full 10g, then put the rest of the old water in... if you can, you may want to leave it for a day to let everything settle, so you're not addint too much water at once, again, depending on what you have, if it's all hardy stuff, then just go ahead and fill her up. :)

if you have any other questions, just ask!

Thanks for the advice. I put a piece of nylon with a few holes over the front to reduce the flow, that helps but it is way too much for the 5gl. tank. I'm sure I'll ask for more tips soon, but after finals because I don't need anymore excuses not to study(like right now for example). thanks again.

sure! if you ever want any frags, let me know, i have a bunch growing out right now. i'm in bethesda. i'm going to have to start pruning and giving stuff away soon.

i go to mostly the ones in VA. blue ribbon koi, fins & feathers are my top two. there are other good ones up towards baltimore, and scattered around. myself and a few other reefers in MD get down to those two VA stores fairly regularly... i'm heading to blue ribbon koi tomorrow, actually. :)

i like the dupont area... i actually work one night a week right near mchpherson square. great area!

I've heard of them. I'll have to go check them out one day. there are two in bmore that I like. I think ones called the aquarium store and I can't remember the name of the other one, its off of 695 maybe? I go to Roozens sometimes. They have so much, and good deals but the conditions aren't ideal. Hey, but what survives there will thrive in a good tank. This area is great. I've been in the neighborhood 'bout 5 and a half years and still love it.

well I'm done with the semester but the stupid jbj light broke again. I'm waiting for the replacement as my tank slips away from me. I'm so upset. They say it the bulb so this is the second bunk one they've sent me. thanks jbj. I can't upgrade until I get this sorted out. bummer thanks for the info. hopefully i'll get this worked out soon.

Sounds good to me. I noticed that you are close. I'm in Dupont. What fish stores do you go to around here?

I know it is a little drive for you, but if you come down I-95 to Richmond, we have an awesome LFS here...Atlantis Aquariums...(http://www.atlantisva.com)...Marvin, the owner, he is active with our local reef club in Richmond...great group of guys working with him as well...

Sorry to hear about the tank...maybe your luck will improve over the holidays... :)

thanks for the tip. I don't have a car and it's hard for me to talk a friend into a whole day of geeking out at the fish store. I'll keep it in mind. aloha.

Do you know how to upload the pics or is that the part you can't figure out? If you can upload them, go to www.photobucket.com and create an account...when you upload a pic, there will be 3 links below the pic...simply click the bottom link and that will be the exact format for posting pics here...just copy it and paste it in to your replies... :)
