So it looks like I may be trading my 40B for a 90g which I have wanted for a while. It is not for sure yet but we both seem to be interested in each others tanks lol. So need some advice on the possible new build. Tank is a 90g standard with overflow, stand and canopy. I will be using my 20l sump at least for a while. My NW110 skimmer pump is swelling on th inside impeller housing so a new skimmer is really needed. I may get a Vertex 180 for about $200 lightly used, also looking at Eshopps 150, Octopus DNWB110, NWB150 thoughts on which skimmer. I have a second 250W MH light with the same Icecap ballast ,lined up to buy on friday. Only difference is it is a SE retro and mine is a DE pendant. Should I just get another SE retro? I also am thinking of adding T5 supplement lighting to this build, if it happens, thoughts?? For flow I have my Korilias and modded MJ. I think I will use both holes in the overflow as drains and run external lines for the returns. I will use my Mag 5 as a return until I get a Mag 7 which I think will be better suited for a 90g, thoughts on to much flow through my sump with a Mag 7? I will be using all my rock from my 40B plus about 30lbs of rock from the 90, so about 70-80lbs total. I may do a BB in this tank. I tried it on my 40 for a while but could never keep the detritus from settling. Any tips? Wish my luck on this tank trade.

The 2 K3's and the modded maxijet won't be enough to run BB on a 90g. You would need to add 2 more at least no less than the Evo1050 preferably the 1400's, the idea is to keep detritus suspended long enough to go down the overflow or setup the flow where it collects in one spot easy to siphon. I also wouldn't run a mag7 for a return through a 20g that's 2 high a turnover IMO, also they produce considerably more heat than the 5's. If you're going to use both lines as drains, you could set one up as a closed loop, then you could probably get away without the added power heads.
Looking forward to the new build!

if this helps for the flow ideas any... i had 2 koralia magnum 7's on my 75g barebottom before adding the 2 mp40s, and i still had deadspots that would accumulate detritus and other junk in certain areas... of course, and only imo, this is what you dont want to happen in a barebottom... the idea of barebottom is to crank high flow to keep everything in the water column to be removed via filter sock and/or powerful skimming... of course i am not telling you to spen the money on large vortechs, jus sharing my experience...

regardless of all that, awesome to hear about your potential upgrade, i think you'll be much more happy with the extra space... also, i would jus use the halide you have now and the one your planning on getting... who cares if they dont match as far as their style, they will both do the job fine imo...

you will also find water quality stability to be much better with more than double the water volume...

GL BRO!

The IN-180 will be way too large of a skimmer.

imo, in a sps system, there is no such thing as too much skimming and definitely in a barebottom system... powerful skimming is the primary idea imo... but thats jus me...

Sure there is. A skimmer too oversized will not operate correctly. You can have very inconsistent skimming and production.

how many koralias do you have ?

I have 2 K2's a Evo1050 and a modded MJ600. As for the lighting my concern is that having a DE and SE bulbs one side of my tank will have a slightly different color, not sure though. For a skimmer I am leaning to either the NW150 or DNWB110 but the only issue I have is the problem I am having with my OPT1000 pump. It is going to fail soon, swelling on the inside! So I am also liking the PSK150 from Eshopps but have ever seen one in person and dont know about build quality and pump quality. Do you really thin a IN-180 will be to big for a system that will be about 95-100 gallons? Only looking at that skimmer because I can get a good deal on a practically new one.

well of course it can be too big in regards to if its gonna effect it functioning properly, like it doesnt fit the systems plumbing or space... but if it fits and its able to work properly and be setup properly, i dont feel it can be too strong... again, jmo, you dont have to agree with me :)

Get the IN-180.

hells yea ;)

Get the IN-180 it's a smokin deal, it will give you room to feed a little heavier and can move with you to a bigger tank:)
BTW I thought you had k3's for some reason...

Will you now be allsps90?
Yeah lol but its not all 100% sps there are a few softies and lps. But I am all about sps. I think I will be getting the IN180 but time will tell. Any thoughts on my lighting plans? I would really like to run a CL on this tank but I will be limited on build time. IF the trade happens I will need to empty my tank and put all my LR and corals in a tub so will the guy that is thinking about trading me. I dont want to leave my sps in a unlit tube for long as I dont want them to lose the color I have been fighting so long to get. It will take time to layout a CL and drill the holes plus the extra cost of bulkheads and plumbing. I will make some changes to the plumbing on the 90 and to my sump. But time will tell, I would like to drill holes in the bottom for CL intake this will cut down on the detritus on the bottom, with an inline filter to keep the pump safe. Lets all hope this turns into a build thread.

Did you work out a RODI setup? I believe I recall you had water quality problems a while back, and I'd go for that first. Apologies if that is not the case.

Yep I now have a DI and 0 TDS water. I also will be building a water station in the garage sometime soon the need for more water increase with tanks size ans water changes.

Well It fell through. So I will remain allsps40 for now.... Made some bids on some skimmers before mine dies and wipes out my tank.
