Upgrading Large Tank Help

Hi All,

I currently have a 200 gallons with 75 gallons sump. Planning on upgrading to a 400 gallons and it will go into the same spot that the 200 gallons is currently located. How best should I approach this upgrade?

Thanks!

many threads about this.

assuming your using new sand, put all rocks in totes and buckets, keep them submerged.

put all fish in another tote with powerhead and heater

put coral in another tote with water and powerhead and heater.

break down tank, position new tank, rinse new sand, add everything back to tank....

Good advise from Maddmax.
If you can I also recommend getting a large tub to house extra salt water and if possible add the necessary pumps to circulate with your existing tank for at least a week so the water is all the same. In my experience this can help minimize shock to livestock/corals when you place into the new tank if you use existing water to fill the new tank. If you can run them together for several weeks, even better, it can really shorten the cycle period in the new reef.
If you do the above in theory between the tank, the tub, & totes you should have pretty close to amount of water you will need to fill the new tank.
If using new sand I recommend saving several pounds of the old sand to spread on top of some of the new to seed it.
