Upgrading to a larger tank

Hey everyone.

I currently have a 20 gallon long, however I haven't put much into it yet and I have made the decision that it will be time to move soon. I already kind of wish I had something larger. Any suggestions on a possible upgrade? I liked the look of Innovative Marine's 40 gallon Fusion with the sump in the back, but I don't want the shape to be an issue since it seems really tall.

Any and all advice is appreciated

Chris

Those 40 gallon breeders seem to be pretty popular. If you want something larger than that a 75 gallon tank might be worth looking into.

+1

40 breeder or 75

Guess it really depends on what kind of fish you want to keep and how many.

I'd go for a 100 or 120. A tank with a 4 foot run is where that wow factor begins in my opinion and starts to open up alot of stock options like small tangs. Just my opinion but plan for the future and consider what you will want to enjoy two or three years from now. My first tank was a 30 so I could "learn the hobby" and all it really was drag out the bill.

The 38x18 footprint can be had in various standard size tanks, 30,40,50,57, and 65, the tank just gets taller. Same for the 48x18 footprint, 75,90 and 110. I wanted something a little roomier so for me the ideal was a 48x24 80 gal, there is also a shallower 60gal in the same footprint and deeper 120. FWIW, your current 20gal long makes a nice sump for the smaller 30 through 50 gal size DT.
It will mostly boil down to your personal available space and budget.

.... and all it really was drag out the bill.

It's just the beginning. You will either spend all your disposable income ( and then some ) on this hobby or leave it entirely for one reason or another.
So get as big a tank as you can afford today. And start saving for the upgrade. It will make your time more enjoyable.

Going from a 20 to a 40b won't add much to what you can keep.
75 is a better choice and a 125 is great.

Make a fish list and see what size tank you would need. If you can afford it then go that route. If you really want to open up the possibilitys of what you can do then a 100 to 300 size tank is the way to go.
