Hey guys.

I have two 55 gal. fishtanks. Now my questions are what would you recommend in getting for equiptment. i have two emperor 400 one for each. I just want fowlr.

I know i need , power heads. protein skimmers. lights. and maybe new filters?

but what do you guys think i should get as far as price and quality. i just got a new house. im low on cash but i have enough for this project.

thanks

If you are going to go with a FOWLR tank I think you can get away with just an Emperor 400 and no skimmer. I have an Emperor 400 on a 75 gallon FOWLR tank and it has been running for a total of 2.5+ years under a friends care and then my care. Although the tank is lightly stocked.

A skimmer is always a wise investment though and I do plan on getting one for my 75 its just I have never had a single problem with the tank and so it is never on my mind.

As far as light go, once again, if you are going to go FOWLR then some simple and cheap strip lights would work just fine, it is what I have over my 75. They are cheap and last a long time!

Well i did have a 55 salt water a long time ago but i never really new anything about it . i just did water changes and cleaned it fedd my fish and they lived i had it for a year and sold it.

Now i have two empty 55's . Like i said i bought a house and i want to make a special room for my tanks lizards and snakes. Ideally i want to have them both be on the same skimmer or too go into the same sump. but i have no clue on how to build one or how to link them.

i just need help on what i should do. i want to keep clowns a yellow tang, a hippo. and some bennies. nothing much. just simple and nice.

Put (2+) Mxijet 900s in each tank for good h2o movement. Id say plum them both to a single sump to have a h2o volume of 100+ gallons...Then put your heater/chiller and skimmer in there. Also the sump provides filtration.

You could probly remove some LR (puti n sump) so there is more room for fish movement. I just dont like the LR w/o coral look....

But yea, it should work out nicely. A skimer is not necessary as long as you keep up with maintenance and have enough filtration and h2o movement.

btw, with a sump...

put an overflow on each tank ($25 each) plum that to the sump. Then use maybe a Mag 5 (500gph) pump for each system or a higher Mag (12?) to push h2o to both systems from the sump.

The overflow will only flow over what the pump(s) is pushing back into the tank(s).

It will give good filtration and make the tank look cleaner. Plus the h2o levelwont drop and top off is done via the sump.

IMO you shouldn't keep a tang in a 55-- they will get cramped pretty fast (they grow rapidly)

egdevilboy" thnaks for the advice. were should i do my shopping for this stuff. my petstores suck here in wisconsin. plus what type of sump do you recommend. and were ca i find such an thing.

I also plan to have coral in the tanks but that would be future work do to the fact that i cant spend too much,

Spuds725" thanks for the advice. i read that but i think that after a year of having this set up i wll be getting a bigger fish thank about 300 gals. i want to have it in my wall seperating my living room and bath room. i say this in a house and i liked it you can see in the tank from the living room to the bath room but you can see in the bath room. and you can see into the living room from the bath room but they cant see you. hehehe thats cool..

After much consideration and talking to the wify (mostly about cost) she slamed a foot down and i will now be doing this ::::::

i will have one 55 with sand and live rock. only using the emperer 400 and a protien skimmer not sure wich one yet. and the other i will use the berlin method. with just a little bit of live sand in the front to get it going. with the emperor400 and a mag 350 pro deluxe and still not sure wich kind of skimmer need a cheap but good one.

so if you have any ideas or suggestions please tell. and do you think that this is a good ideaa?

thanks guys
