Urchin spawning or something else?

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first post.

I have a blue tuxedo pincushion urchin that released a black substance into the tank yesterday.

Everything that I've found about urchins in regards to spawning reports that the urchin sperm is white, and urchin roe is orange .

Unless I've missed it, does the color matter? This was black.

I got video of the end of the event as it was happening in my tank yesterday.

Video here: mespilla globulus spawning?

I changed 3 gallons out of the canister filter carriage at 12pm. Spawning event occured at 3pm.

Amm0 Nit0 N'ate20 pH 8.4 SG 1.022, Temp 76.5

I know they do their spawning thing after water changes sometimes, but I'm wondering if this was even a spawning thing at all. First time I've seen my urchin do this. It's running around in the tank looking perfectly healthy and behaving normally.

Your thoughts? Thank you!

As reefmack said it's waste. Sometimes they expel pellets, other times it is runnier and looks like a blackish brown liquid (animals get diarrhea too)

Urchins also expel ammonia through their gills.

The sperm is white and eggs are orange gel like (go to a high end sushi restaurant to see urchin roe)
