I don't know where to post this question as reef central is saltwater only forum but, I am not a member of any other forums and I know that a lot of saltwater hobbiest have had freshwater in the past. I was at an lfs that I don't frequent but go to occasionally they have a display with an 12 inch irradescent shark the display is 30 gallons. They have had this fish for the longest time and it looks miserable in its tank as they have not been able to sell it due to its size. I have a 2000 gallon pond unheated outdoors that in the summer stays around 65-75 degrees in the summer it houses goldfish bowl rescues and an australian rainbow fish which is tropical I did not put it in, my sister did not knowing it was tropical that has lived there for a year due to its speed and my inability to catch it, little troll is uncatchable. I am asking if until I can get a heated pond setup probably a year, I can keep him in my outdoor pond, I know that they are tropical fish and would not do this for the sake of having a irradescent shark; I want to know because he seems so miserable

I'm glad that someone was able to answer. :)

IDK who in their right mind would attempt to put a fish that can get to 4 feet into a 30 gallon aquarium. Simply amazes me at times.

"Rescuing" this guy is only going to show them that they can get the sale and theyll just do it again. You are now promoting their bad fishkeeping :c

Really? Really? And what would you rather happens to the poor fish? He is not promoting Bad fishkeeping, but rather someone who is willing to step in and clean up someone else's irresponsibility and incompetence.

Its not our job to rescue every fish in the world. Some will die. If the owners saw it pas.. theyd probably not get another. Now they'll just do it again. *slow clap* good job

Its like when people try to buy out all the comets in the feeder tank. The store says "boy those sold fast.. better stock up twice as much now"

Perhaps you didnt notice this part in the conversation:

IThey have had this fish for the longest time and it looks miserable in its tank as they have not been able to sell it due to ...

Generally businesses dont like to have livestock for "the longest time" especially since iridescent sharks dont bring in that much money. Its just not worth it. So likely the business learned the lesson and the fish doesnt have to suffer, but if you prefer to let it suffer just to make a point...

I love this hobby. I love my fish. But lets face it a fish is a fish. And yea. Id let an animal that isnt mine stay the way it is. Their fault. They should deal with it. rescuing fish from stores is pointless.

The larger sharks dont sell. The smaller ones do. Now with a 30 gallon open they are free to buy juvy sharks and sell those.

Cmon I work at PetSmart and we have Oscars and Balas.. Silver Dollars and Tinfoil Barbs get wayy to big for our tanks. Dont see me rescuing them. Cause guess what. Theyll just order more because it sold. Now the fish that dont sell... they get discontinued. Say we have 5 longfin albino bristlenose plecos. Nobody huys them for a couple of weeks. They stop ordering them

obviously this fish had been sitting there for quite some time and the fact they make little money on this fish should be enough to stop the store from ordering more.

If irresponsibility were the issue wouldnt working at Petsmart be pretty much the worst common denominator in this scenario. unless you refuse to sell people these fish, which I highly doubt and remain employed, lecturing someone for rescuing a fish because that is contributing to the issue is pretty hypocritical.

Ive had people complain to the district manager about me refusing sales. Never been fired. As much as youd like to think PetSmart is corrupt. Our first priority at my store is animal health and welfare.

Yet Petsmart continues to bring in tinfoil barbs, silver dollars, oscars, and bala sharks, of which petsmart brings in waaaay more than there are people that cxan house them, then sure I believe that petsmart has that policy.

Nice try.
