yesterday i spent the whole day getting the big tank finished so it is ready. The water is on the end of the cycle. I woke up this morning to feed the fish in the small tank and i forgot to turn the flow and skimmer back on after i fed last night!!!! what and idiot,i saw my antias dead floating on the top, the cow fish dead floating on the bottom, so now i have to get allt he fish out of the water and into the new tank. I was not going to do it for another week.

I have read when a cow fish dies it relaeses a toxin?!!???? so I'm not planning to use any of the water. I've been running carbon and GFO on the big tank water and have all the fish dripping at the moment. I stll have some nitrites in the big tank.

Should i use any of the old tank water or dump it all n fear of toxins int he water?

anything I can do for the big tank to make sure the water has finished the cycle? I was thinking of adding some of the ammonia killer stuff???

I feel like crap right now one of my best buds for over a eyar i forgot to turn the flow on and killed him. It was only like 7 1/2 hours

awww...... any advise?

damn bro that sux. the cowfish definately releases toxins and i wouldn't use any old tankwater. I would get try and persuade someone to do an early water change and give u the water.

that sucks dude. sorry your fish died.

I dont think using the old tank water brings that much benefit especially since you have been running the water in the big tank for a while now to age it a bit. I wouldnt worry about it just be sure to acclimate the fish to the new water as you would a new purchase.

oh thats horrible - i did that one time so i know how you feel. it is possible to cycle a tank with sensitive fish ( i did it with one tank) but its a real pain and involves lots of work.
i would also recommend getting cycled water from someone or have someone board the fish that made it.
i can do an early water change from my 150g today if you want. i have never had disease, pest, or bad test results in my large tank. i am very particular about my water and preventing problems. all the fish and corals in my tank are in great health.

or depending on what fish you have left i could put them in one of my tanks until yours cycles .
anyways call me if you want some help 801-707-0933 marylee i am available all day and would be more than happy to help out . i live in penngrove

Thanks guys, i just finished dripping trhe fish and they seem fine. Alot better than a tank with no flow....I'm such an idiot! I'm dripping my corals right now in a 55 gal trash can. I think everyhting is going to be ok. Except for the cow fish, anthias, 6 line wrass, cleaner shrimp and one cromie. Kinda weird the cromie died and the tang and a few other fish that you would think are not as hardy made it. I have to get a battery back up now. Too much heart ache if this happens again. I have had power outages for 4-5 hours and everything was fine. I guess 7 1/2 is over the limit......well I'll let you guys know how it plays out.

Shane,

Sorry to hear about your fish. You know if you need anything to call I hope. I just got back from work to read your story. I know how much that cowfish me to you and your girlfriend:( It always amazes me how some things survive and some don't. I had a tep malfunction once and everything died except a large seabae anenome and a mandarin. Two things you would think were fragile. I think I will start lokking for a backup as well.

well to my surprise i dripped everything that was living adn they all look much better =) but it's still a sad day i had to stay home from work and worked on it from 6 am till 4pm to get them all in the new tank. glad i at least had somewhere for them to go it could haev been worse. It just sucks the cowfish died of all them, i've even seen him breath at the top of the water so I'm shocked he didn't make it. At least my coral will not be nipped any more......well the good thing is i got and hooked up my 2 mp40's that made me smile a bit. Still trying to get a wave going. I think with the two of them and my waev box it may be messing it up....well more to come.

sorry to hear about your loss I know the cow was your fav that is so weird that 7+ hours was enough to kill all of them must have gotten really cold or something and you better dump the water don't want to take any chance with the new tank. If you need anything just let me know , if you want some sand out of my sump it could help your cycle along as my tank is over 6 years old and has a lot of critters in the sand. let me know. Grant

The fish and coral still look good.....still have my fingers crossed. I just look at it that it could have been much worse. But it still sucks to loose the fish to my error. I'll try to get back on the 180 build thread horse again tonight to post some more pics. Looking at the tank last night it was bitter sweet. Everyone was in and looked happy but the star of the show was gone, Mr. Cow.....

Sorry to hear about your losses, Shane... the bright side is that you still have to go through three or four more episodes like that one before you'll even be close to catching up with me!

-Nate, Keeper of The Tank of Death :-)

Sorry to hear about your hard time. I've gone away for a weekend and turned everything off except for a powerhead in the tank. I must have been flirt'n with disaster. Those cow fish must be sensitive.

....i was just reading something about cowfish...they can go to "sleep" when they are stressed. I put him in a QT tank for 2 hous with no movment and then got rid of him....i wonder if he was just sleeping....oh gosh i hope not. Now i really feel like crap....everything is doing good in the new tank so i guess that is good.

but then other stuff was dead in the tank too so it may not hae been the case, i just have no way of knowing now. I jsut thought after two hours of no movment he was done....anyone know?
