"Group buys" are a way for hobbyists, who are local to one another, to save money by pooling shipping costs. If it's organized by a vendor, it's not a group buy, it's a sale. That's also why we require that they be organized by a club member and why they aren't allowed on the main part of the forum.

I think we can all understand and agree with this... but what was being done differently in this case? It was organized by a local for other locals. I think we all just want to know the proper way to organize a group buy and be within the RC guidelines, relevant to our 'loose' club situation.
 
ok, thanks Doug...i guess what i'm asking is, if we all have accounts...make an order and one person puts all of those together...what category does that fall into?
 
I think that rc should charge dues. Keep those who are just on here messing around making RC life miserable, taking up bandwidth and server space at bay. Maybe we could even get our search options back. I keep using that goolge RC search and getting hits from the early 2000's. Can a brutha get recent threads from a search plz.

I would guess the issue here is "URS Group Buy" as opposed to a "group buy". One infers "members" of URS the other is anyone. Just my 2 cents.

I have the info on the proper way to do it, I just need to know if there is an officer for our "club" if there is not I have been informed by another mod that as long as none of our club members have a problem with a group buy being posted in our forum then there is no problem.
The original problem was that I read thru the BRS terms of a "group" buy and there is no actual need for it to be a localized club, it can just be a "group" of people that want to be included as the group buy is shipped individually not as one large order. With all that being said I had a post removed from the general discussion and was warned about the nature of the post and that the only place they were allowed was in a club forum and that they must be sanctioned by a club officer, hence the original post asking about our club officer. The intent was to speak to said club officer about the thread in the URS forum regarding the group buy If you read my OP youll see what was said.

Kat, it falls under the group buy category. this thread got a a bit off track hope this is a bit clearer now.
 
I don't see anything senseless about it. The group buy policy is in place to help clubs and RC itself moderate interactions between users and vendors. Without these sorts of regulations, this place WOULD be a big huge mess. I'm glad this policy is in place because it helps clubs keep out commercial riffraff.

At any rate, we here in upstate NY are using this forum free of charge and with very little asked of us in terms of carrying the (much larger than you might imagine) cost or administrative overhead required to run an online forum. We have been given a lot more leeway in terms of determining how our URS forum is run than might be apparent on the surface. We are plugged in to the world's largest online reefkeeping community. We are essentially here as guests - we've got it pretty good. So doing something as simple as checking with someone before posting a group buy seems to me like a really insignificant thing for the RC admins to ask of us.
 
Completely agree dwzm, but I'm wondering if there is any convenient way to "sticky" this info fyi to our forum as I am sure that somewhere down the road someone else will get the idea to do one of these and have no clue about that being something our RC mods would like us to do? I just don't want any future newbies to the group getting a bad taste in their mouth if they get reprimanded for not doing something when they weren't aware they were supposed to do it. :) I'm sure some of us will remember this and may be able to give them a "heads up" but chances are also likely that we will either not be on here at the time to do so, or we will have other stuff on our mind and not even give it a thought.
 
Hello, Mel! Agreed. See...i know me. Kat doesn't ever read rules...she plows ahead blindly until someone says, "whoa..hang on...."

It would be nice to have a place at the top that says, "read this before posting" or something.

in addition, if there needs to be a "club administrator" or whatever is necessary, I believe I heard that Gary M. is that go-to person..but if we need anyone else to back that up,, i would be willing to lend a hand. Just a suggestion...since i'm on here all the time.

Agreed - it seems like our group's loose organizational structure is probably at least partly to "blame" in terms of URS members not knowing about the policies. I'll ask with the RC folks to see how they want to handle this.
 
I understand that everyone is supposed to read the user agreement when signing up here so technically, if it's in there, newbies should actually be aware of what it says. I think the larger exposure may exist when someone signed up prior to any revisions and then later on finds out about our URS forum. I know I haven't reread the UA since I signed up 6 years ago but perhaps I should give it a "browse". ;)
 
I never intended this to become such an ordeal, I merely wished to find out who was the club officer. I have already spoken with A Moderator and have been told that if there are no objections within our forum (URS) that there are no objections from RC as long as it is within our forum.
 
not an ordeal at all. I'm hoping that someone in the realms of being in charge will see this and realize a need. I like to be informed...but sometimes i am not able to keep myself informed...does that make sense?
