I just replaced my bulbs so I have some USED 250W de hqi 250W 13K mh's and 2 60" 140W super actinic VHO's if anyone wants them FREE. I used them since the middle of May last year so I don't know how good they are anymore. I'm in Clay, about 10 miles north of Syracuse.

Got the new mh's from championlighting who had the cheapest price of $55 for XM 250W hqi de mh 10K plus a 10% coupon last weekend.

I got the VHO's from petsolutions for $27.99 each and they don't charge extra because of the length.

I thought it was a good deal. I spent all day looking and comparing prices. I figured I save about $100. Made the husband happy.

Suggestion for you . . .

You might want to keep a couple in case one of them blows. It may not be the best replacement but it would buy you some time while you replace it.

I agree w/ Sherry34,I beleive that VHO's should be replaced every year, I could be wrong but I think I read that somewhere.

9 months is about the maximum you would want to run a VHO bulb. The spectrum drops off quickly after a certain amount of burn time.
Ditto the notion of keeping a few spare MH's around in case of a problem - a 1 week old 400 watter popped on me a couple weeks ago. Boy, was I glad I had my old one's sitting around.

Welcome to ReefCentral and the URS, jramah!

MH Replacment

MH Replacment

how often is everyone changing their Metal Halides? I think they go longer than the VHO's.

Ditto the spare bulb suggestion.
How do you like the new lights, Carrie?

Gary, I like them. I think I can see a difference in brightness but I'm waiting for the corals to "tell" me they like them better. I noticed the corals weren't looking as good about a month ago. I do water changes once a month and all my levels are right where they are supposed to be so it must have been the lights. We'll see.

The lights were about 10 months old so I knew they needed changing.

This depends on the bulb and ballast. For example: Iwasaki lamps are good for over a year. Radium 20k's are good for less than a year.
