I found a Sun System TEK 4x39 36" fixture used for a pretty good price and was wondering a few things before I purcahse it.

What should I look for before paying hte guy as I can see it in person when I go.

He sent pictures of the light, here are the few things I was told and showed in pictures.

1) the screws have rust on them, is that normal?
2) doesn't have a splash guard, dont they come wiht one?
3) he doens't have the legs for it as he has it hung, I did some research and foudn them for $65????? *** is it made of titanium?
4) I asked about fans and ballast, he said there aren't any fans adn the ballast is self contained, not sure what that means.

Also includes 4 bulbs that are 6 months old.

I bought my TEK 6 x 54 fixture used and it didnt come with a splash guard and had a small ammount os rust on a few screws. Mine is in my canopy, no fans, runs silent and works great!

I dont have a canopy and can't hang it, any tips on what to do with a DIY maybe? can't afford to pay 65 for something that shouldn't cost more than $15.

Can I make a splash guard?

My tek fixture didnt come with a splash guard. i made one out of some clear acrylic, but ended up taking it off and just wipe bulbs down when i do water changes. I agree the legs are expensive, but I hang mine, I'm sure someone could design their own legs for less than $65.

5 years is getting old. The new TEK has advance ballasts that come with a 5 year warranty. When purchasing a TEK it is extra for the splash sheild, legs, and hanging kit(unless it is TEK elite model, still need a wire/chain to hang it I think)
That said the original TEK runs brighter without the splash shield as it has no active cooling fans. If you can hang it a couple inches higher you won't get much salt on the bulbs. How much $$$ for it?
I hung my sunpower with wall brackets( clothes hanger brackets ) and PVC pipe. The brackets had holes in it and I drilled the PVC to run a nail through the PVC and mount, it works like a pin that keeps the PVC from sliding off the brackets.

The new Teks come with a splash shield included. The old one's didn't. Still the same with hanging kits, legs though. I don't bother with splash shields because they filter out some of the light and hold in heat.

I used electrical conduit that I bent to hang mine. Also if you look around on the hardware isle with the screws and such in the bins you should be able to find some plastic caps you can paint to match the conduit.

my fixture is that age and the screws are a bit rusty. It would be better to use a splash card to preserve the ends and reflector but if the price is good they are made to last
