Ushio 14K

I have a pair of 250DEs and LOVE the color when used with my actinics.....the Pheonix I had were too blue compared....very happy with them......I don't think Sanjay has done the numbers on them, so I don't know how they rate in PAR, but the Ushio website MAY have something on it.....I would buy them again....

I just put three 250 DE's on my 180. They are much brighter than the Pheonix bulbs they replaced. Its been less than two weeks. I'm still adjusting to the color.

They are VERY bright and IME really need actinic supplementation or they will appear a little yellowish. I was running them off of HQI ballasts and I just replaced them with Phoenix bulbs. I believe they were tested, the Ushio and the BLV are the exact same bulb according to Ushio (I emailed them to confirm).

Growth with them was very good. I am personally digging my Phoenix off HQI with the T5 supp but I expect growth to slow a bit.

i agree with fliger, use some actinic or they will be yellow, crist white color with the actinics on, i like the look, growth is good.

How would 10K AB DE's compare to 14K Ushio DE's (250W) in color? The 10K AB's are closer to 8-9K, it seems... With VHO supplementation, there isn't a ton of blue that makes it through the yellow of the AB 10K's. It's time to swap bulbs...

I would not call them yellow under any circumstances. The 10k Ushios had a minor yellow tinge to them. The 14k's are what the 10k's should have been.

I was running both 10k and 14k at the same time, and there is a minor difference to them.

I run 2 48" URI VHO actinics with my Ushio's and plan to stick to this bulb.

Well as with any lighting I guess its all relative and color is in the eye of the beholder. My last two sets of bulbs before the Ushio 14K were Phoenix and Giesemann 14.5K Corals. To me, my wife and quite a few reefers who saw them they appear slightly yellow. Nothing like the Giesemann 13K Megachrome or the Ushio 10K or the AB 10K - but not pure white either. I thought those three still appeared yellow even with a couple Actinics but the Ushio 14K is absolutely killer with a couple actinics. I've had a lot of 250W DE bulbs and the Ushio/BLV 14k, Giesemann Coral are definitely two of my favorites.

i've been thinking about trying the aqualince buschke 10k DE 250w bulb next time, anybody have any experince with them?

Between the two, which did you like better? I have run the Giesemann 13k, 20k and the BLV 14k. I didn't like either Giesemann bulb as they were too blue or too yellow, but never got a chance to try the 14.5k.

I love the BLV as I find it quite white looking. I need something that can be run without actinics as I run an open top system with pendants. I want to have a nice happy medium between PAR and color, but it's hard to achieve without actinics.

After two weeks (over 200 hours) of running the Ushio 14K on Icecaps, I do find them a bit yellow (CCT-8988). Nothing like the XM 10k type of yellow though. But, there is a very very slight hint of yellow if I run these bulbs without my T5 actinic's.

The major plus to running these bulbs IMHO is not having to change them out every 5-6 months (unlike the Phoenix).

As far as the corals go: I have noticed accelerated growth, new colors, and my tank really doesn’t look washed out. There just seems to be more contrast. Of course, this is my opinion and your mileage may very.

Dirtyreefer - the 14.5K Giesemann is maybe my favorite bulb. Its extremely bright and very white. I was running them in a Giesemann Eco fixture. IIRC, Sanjay incorrectly labeled the "Coral" as the 13K bulb - but it should be the 14.5K bulb. I just put in the Phx bulbs and want to run them for a month or so, then I'm gonna but back the Ushio 14K bulbs. I'll probably order the Giesemann bulbs also.

Very bright (typically leave a little sun burn on my acros), but coral coloration is great. I run actinic VHO's and there is only a slight difference when they are turned off (AB 10K DE's are very yellow). I've had great growth, though, and as I mention above, coral coloration is great.

Been using the Ushio 14k DE's for about 7 months. Pretty happy with them overall but like mentioned, the more actinic, the better.
I wouldnt exactly call them yellow but they are clearly not near as blue as the P14k's.
I think the Ushios do put out more light tho... so a trade off.

Now I visited a friends tank awile back that was using the Ushios with 4 T5s, 2 actinic pure and 2 Blue+ and I thought the combo was just awesome. :)

Thought this thread could use a pic:

Two Ushio 14ks and Two 54w Blue+ T5.

I ran 2x250w DE ushio 14k's off a PFO HQI ballast and could not tell the difference between my BLV 10k's. A buddy ran these bulbs off an Icecap MH ballast and the color was a very nice blue/white, but not as blue a the phoenix bulbs.
