using clams instead of skimmers?

I was thinking of going with a new clam tank and adding 15-20 clams just curious how efficient they are at pulling nutrients out of the water? I was hoping i could go with a smaller skimmer or no skimmer on my system with that many clams

I've often thought of the same thing, and you may actually have success with nitrate reduction in such a setup. Phosphates may prove challenging, as will keeping up with calcium/alkalinity. What else do you plan on putting in the tank?

it would be also plumbed with my main tank but the clam tank would only have the clams in them and maybe a few shrimp anf a wrasse

You might want to read this thread, still not sure if clams can have a significant impact on bio filtration.
