using fresh sea water

You would have been totally insane to do such a thing. Especially if you try and get it from New Smyrna Beach. I would almost guarantee that all of your marine life will perish very soon if you did what I think you did.
 
I know of a guy that goes out on his boat about 7 miles and pumps about 110 gals. in to drums for water changes on his 300+ gal. tank w/ no problems. I think the trick is to get it from an area where there is a lot of water movement. That way there shouldn't be too many contaminants.
 
I use sea water. I have never had any problems. There is a store in South Daytona that also sells sea water. I believe they filter it. They are located on Nova Rd, just north of Reed Canal. If you go out to the ocean you just have to be careful about the time of day. Ponce Inlet is a good place to get your own seawater.
 
I have spoken with the owner of the store and some of his customers, they swear by collecting their own water. They said to collect exactly at high tide, about 3 feet deep.

I am wondering about storing the water- won't the bacteria, etc. die.

Also pollution, algae blooms are a concern

Any thoughts?
 
Go out in the ocean a ways to get away from the, what I like to call, skimmer section of the ocean. The shorelines is where all the crap collects from the ocean and is expelled.. The foam on the water is the collection of skimmate. Go where not many boats are, not many people are, and deep enough and the water you get should be crystal clear.

We went out 14 miles this week. Hit high tide and the water was perfect! SG 24 and clear. I did a 10 gal change with my 55 this week. I can let you guys know of any pros and cons.
 
I spoke to someone who is having problems after a change with sea water the other day. I believe he added some jellyfish to his tank.
 
My zoos are acting a little funny since a NSW change. I am beginning to wonder about using NSW. I took it from the shoreline though. Maybe I will try getting it from Ponce Inlet like the LFS in Daytona does. Or maybe I will just go back to good old ASW.
 
I fill up my four 7 gallon jugs from walmart every weekend during high tide from as far out as i can stand (then swim a bit farther out) at the beach in Ormond by the Sea..have been doing this for years 4 at least...have not had an issue....but thats just me....have a few softies and mostly sps's...things always look better after a change...especially if i have to wait a week or two because of rain or work or...well u get the picture...we strive to get everything natural in every other means..so why would we stop at this?...if its available...uise it...I know its not feasable to most..but I live 6-10 houses from the beach...so its a no brainer to me...but again...just my opinion..think its wrong for people who have not done it to chime in and say that its wrong....Roy
