Using plywood base under stand for leveling, do I need to waterproof?

As per title. I don't tend to spill too much water when I do a change, but the occasional splash might happen.

Wood is painted with latex paint. Do I need to do anything to protect it from water? Or should it be fine?

The MDF stand has been fine all this time, so plywood should be fine, right?

Latex paint is sufficient and provides water protection just fine..
All raw wood should be finished in some sort for aquarium use..

Latex is perfectly fine, for my painted stands that is actually my preference as it remains flexible.
Really all you need is a finish that repels water, many will do just that

I've been using exterior grade plywood around my tanks. Then primed and painted. Seems to be holding up well.

+ 1 to this, I also use marine grade plywood.

really no need for marine grade plywood.. But it certainly won't hurt..
Prime/painted is plenty protection for occasional drips/infrequent water accumulation..

Marine grade is simply a more waterproof glue and less/no voids in the veneer..

I'm a firm believer in using multiple nylon furniture pads spaced at about 12" on center under the stand to lift it up slightly off the floor. This allows some air movement and also lets you slip a thin towel under the stand to soak up spills. No one to my knowledge plans a spill, but they happen all the time. No need in having a pool of water sitting under your stand and soaking up into the wood.
