Ok Vet dog.. Tell me about these. I have a bit of an ich outbreak in my 72 bow. Can't catch the fish w/o breaking down the set up. They are healthy enough to survive round 1, but I understand a UV filter will kill most of the ich in the free swimming stage and prevent the cycle from continuing. Will these units do that or is it something different...???

You are correct in saying that the UV light will kill the ich in the free swimming stage, hence, suppossedly stopping the cycle there. The claim with these lights is that along with free floating algae they also will eliminate protozoan parasites such as ich during the new born, free swimming life cycle stage of the parasites. According to something I read many aquarists only use the UV at night. There are many free floating beneficial planktonic animals in the water that come out at night that can be killed by a uv sterilizer. Because of this many aquarists only run their uv during the day. You can put it on the same timer as your lighting system.

I was talking to Chris at UA before I remembered your posting... In terms of size, I'm a little worried that your large one is too large and the 5 watt is too small... anyone want to weigh in on this? Vetdog, thoughts?

I think a more apt way to phrase it would be that a UV sterilizer will suppress the numbers of ich in the tank, but will not likely kill all of it.

Read up on what UV sterilizers do and get an idea of why you would want to use it.

I wound up buying a 15 watt in line UV filter from UA. The Trigger was healthy enough towithstand a couple of bouts if ich. The cleaner shrimp and goby seemed to be working him pretty well. As of this writing, the fish is ich free and the filter has been functioning for nearly two weeks. My water is clearer than it's ever been! Vetdog if you have the larger UV unit still, I have a friend with a pond who may be interested.
