Uv + Fuge

i would run a seprate pump or on the feed for the fuge, if its on the return it may kill some of the live stuff you want in the tank, like pods

sorry post got chopped, anyways if your using the fuge for nutrient export only, not for pods and food for the tank , then you can run it after

I would not run the refugium return line through the uv. It will not kill pods since they are too large ,unless the sterilizer was enormous or a pod decided to live in it.
However,it is best to move clean water through the sterilizer to keep the quartz sleeve clean which is likely not the case with water from the refugium

I have an 8 watt sterilizer on it's own loop on the fuge. it goes from the return sump section and passes through the sterilizer and back to the skimmer compartment. not in the actual refugium area. seems to be working quite well. while my return pump is by itself to the tank. also if i were to run the sterilizer on the return to the tank it puts more head loss to the system as the sterilizer is 3/4" fittings and my return line and pump are 1"

also tom, i know you have a 25 watt gamma. think of it this way you are running a high volume pump, so the water is gonna be forced through there pretty fast. which does not give the sterilizer adequate time to do it's job properly. on my 8 watt in he closed loop, i have a rio 2100 recirculating through it. so the water is moving through there slower it has more contact time. to work more effectively. give this a thought. you might like the results you get. remember this is just my opinion you can try what you like. hey you know what i'll send you some pics via e-mail so you can see how i set mine up, cool?

That's right. The lethality depends on the amount of radiation the organism receives relative to it's size. The amount of radiation it get's is determined by the wattage of the bulb and the "dwell time
"(the amount of time the organism is exposed). For example the manufacturer of the Coral life tubo twist 18w sterilizer claims lethality to bacteria at a flow rate of 500gph,algae which are larger at a flow rate of 240gph and parasites at a flow rate of 110gph.

Robgixxer - I think you misunderstood what I was asking. I have my return to my display on 1" pipe and that is being left alone. I have a sepearate fuge from my sump and need to plumb a return from the fuge to the sump for circulation. My question related to having the UV on the return for the fuge only. I have decided to plum that loop by itself.

aha, i see. so you got the other setup now running as a fuge? cool! how is the tank doing now? i'll have to come by and check it out today. also i have something for you that you have been waiting patiently for. thanks for understanding. i'll call you in a bit when i get somethings done that i have to do. also check your email. i sent you the pics of what i did with my sterilizer. i know your setup differs from mine but it's worth a look, the tank is coming along very nicely but really slow too. LOL
