UV on a SPS tank

I dont know how phosphate can kill a fish, but maybe extremely elevated levels it is possible? Yes, a UV, provided it has a large enough dose (C x t) can convert organic phosphate to orthophosphate. Organic phosphate is bound and generally can not be sequestered, until it is eventually released (tank crash). Orthophosphate can be sequestered by fish, algae, zoox, etc...

I meant exotic sps corals ($$). Thanks for your answer. Is orthophosphate the one we are able to test for (when using a Salifert or other kit)?

Hey Bomber I feel like I'm following you .

What kind of water flow you putting through that 80W HO? I'm looking into the 40watter and was wondering what flow to use for our pupose of use ?

Here I go again more ?'s .:p

If I remember right, it's about 1000gph.

I am assuming phyto/algae. Sterilizes phyto and waterborne algae along with converting organic phosphate to orthophosphate. More AOC is produced. Just to make sure I am following. ;)

Actually it's bacteria. But for our purposes, it's six of one - 1/2 doz of the other.

You got it. ;)

Wouldn't a uv cut down on natural plankton?
Bomber do you feed your sps frequently?

I am getting ready to add DT's oysters...is the uv going to hurt this ???

Are you using ozone Bomber, or just UV? I'd like to get a UV Sterilizer set-up on our 180 and it looks like the 50w would be more then sufficient (our total system volume is about 300gal.)

Are these UV Sterilizers sold with pumps or do you have to buy a separate pump?

Those eggs are already dead, so no. BUT it might help them degrade faster. If they're in your system long enough to get to the UV without being eaten, that's probably a good thing.

Man, i cant believe this one came back from the dead. Speaking of which...

I think he used UV only. Seperate pump.

Boy you missed the biggest drama in the history of RC, if you're still asking Bomber questions. You might find him on another forum somewhere that rhimes with The Beef Sank. :D

Nice tankslave, beef stank lol :D. I can't even type I am laughing too hard.

Yes he used UV only, an 80W HO emperor aquatics unit, and he used it on a closed loop (of a sort) within his tank, I think he had about 1000GPH through it.

If I remember right there was a thread somewhere where Bomber had said units below 40W were useless, then even then the composition of the quartz sleeve the bulb went in, and the bulb itself were VERY important. He highly reccomended the unit he used, but with a lower flow you would proably be able to get buy with the 40W version.

He also said that the bulbs degrade to 1/2 output in a year, so it is best to buy one that has double the watage you need for the flow you plan to put through it so you don't have to replace the bulbs as often.

(he said it all much better though)

I joined the realms of UV and Ozone together in a 72 gallon reef. I'm fighting a massive ich epidemic that I tried treating with reef safe meds with no positive results.

I've only been up and running for about 3 days and I'm seeing some positive results, my fish are not darting around in the night like before.

I run the 36 watt Turbo twist 12x and the Ozonizer 50 mg/hr Sanders under a full deltec AP600 skimmer.

I'll keep you guys informed on the bench mark for these two titans fighting a unholy war; evil ich.

I've always been kind of wary of using ozone. What are the dangers associated with its use? how likely are you to run into any actual health problems because of its use? what about animals that sleep near the area where the unit is running (sump room in garage, dogs sleep in garage), are they more susceptible to health problems?

No, he left. Long story.

There was an article in RK mag, i think, about the dangers of using ozone. You can ask randy for more info. I think there was some gov study saying that ozone is a lot more dangerous and had more long term health effects than previously thought.

I'd just stay away from it...

I saw something not too long about about the the health problems you start to incur as the level of ozone increases. I can't remember where it was, but it was pretty interesting. I know people that use it with no problems, but I'm not sure if I'd ever use it myself.
