The DE bulbs must run with the shields in place. They have no UV shielding envelope on the bulb. The SE bulbs have the shielding built in and do not require the extra glass.

A SE bulb didn't come with a glass shield? Do you have a picture of that? I have never seen a single ended bulb without a glass shield...they are built-in to the bulb. Maybe I am just confused.

Correct, as SE bulbs outer glass has the UV shield incorporated into that. [part of the bulb itself]
So no additional UV screening is necessary for most SE bulbs, as it's part of the bulb.
DE bulbs have no outer glass envelope ... so require a glass UV shield with the fixture [as the bulb does not have any shielding, you need a separate shield in the fixture]
