They work if you have a need for it, Some blooms that cloud the water can be cleared up very quickly with a UV. But it kills what it comes in contact with be it good or bad, Run all the time I'm not sure if that is good or not. I personally have used one but no longer do.
I had one on my 75 that i had running for 3 years and i have now one on my 180 setup that has been running for 1 1/2 years... I have never had a problem with them and I believe in them.
There are mixed feelings out there but I believe in them.
yeah i was planning on putting one on my new build, but sold it. in a 3-chamber sump, i'd put it on the skimmer section. that way it'll zap the water before the refugium adds it's nutrients that will be returned to the tank
I have been using one for about a year now, and water clairty has been very good, unless I stir it up..... I think over all I'm glad I spent the money for it, and mine runs 24/7 not sure if that is a good or bad thing, it is just I've never put a timer on mine, not sure if it is needed, but always something to consider.
