Vacation Reef Destination

Dove, Fiji, Hawaii, all southern Caribbean, barrier reef, Red Sea, most of the med.
The Red Sea is amazing, has the biggest fish population, best corals and loads of big sharks and rays, and lots of decent wrecks.
I am heading to the Maldives for a month in November, whale sharks are on my dive menu for sure.

I would always recommend the Red Sea, Hurgarda is my fave destination, great hotels, and Red Sea divers is an amazing club.

I've been to Belize, and Hawaii (Big Island, Maui). All three are great locations, and Hawaii is pretty inexpensive compared to Australia! Belize is good too, and we saw wonderful things there.

HI: Advantage: You can walk into the water and be right at the reef. Disadvantage: lots of other folks looking too.

Belize: You can be the only ones in the water; just you, your guide and the fish.
Disadvantage: You must hire a boat to go to the reef, as it's a few miles off shore. Stay away from San Pedro, and go down toward Hopkins Village, south of Dangrigas. You'll see great stuff and no one else to bother you. (Also, watch for food poisoning! Don't eat street food!)
